'17 TN ATH Jacoby Stevens (LSU commit)

First stop of the day was Oakland High school where I spent about twenty minutes with Jacoby Stevens. Had a chance to meet with his coach, Kevin Creasy, first, and he told me that Stevens will be waiting until the end of June/first of July to make any kind of commitment. He wants his star player focusing on spring ball and Oakland until their dead period. That being said, he did say the Stevens is quite a fan of the Bulldogs. Stevens confirmed that's his plan, and he's tentatively looking at July 19 (his birthday) for a possible commitment.

We talked about his top options, and, as Trent mentioned in the earlier post, he confirmed that Georgia is still on top for his services. Mel Tucker was by last week to check in on Stevens, and the two keep in contact on a daily basis, as Stevens noted they text all the time since the ban on communication has been lifted. The four-star athlete believes the new Georgia staff know how to build a winner. His family also likes the school, and his trainers at National Playmakers Academy have a close relationship with several people on the Bulldogs staff, primarily Sam Pittman and Jim Chaney.

LSU is in striking distance, while Tennessee finds themselves in third place at the moment. All of the mentioned schools will get visits, as will the likes of FSU and Florida prior to any decision making.

Really like Georgia's chances here for the time being.

-From Georgia's rivals board. One of their writers or whatever

I was a little bummed at what I read until the last sentence.

Our recruiters are just fine. All you chicken little types need to take up bingo or knitting in the off season. Our program is on the upswing. Anybody that doesn't see that is blind dumb and stupid...........

We ought to all be glad that NSD is a long way off. Right now, we would flub badly trying to get premiere in-state talent to sign on. And after the fine job our coaching staff did in 14' and 15' (16' was a thin class in TN) it looks like our homegrown 17ers just are not jazzed abt playing for the Vols. If NSD were today, we'd sign Fant, Bumphus, and Hayden and maybe, hopefully, Smith , Higgins, and Rutmeier. Not a bad haul, but it cold be LOTS better.
Again, glad NSD is a long way away.
Best way to change our recruiting fortunes? Win football games
....lots of them, soon.

Have to win. Wait and see approach.

I get that but if he is going to commit in July, we won't have time to win in 16 unless you think he flips if we win regardless of anything else. So, do you think he is a commit for Georgia and then flips if we win the east over them or he will wait to commit?

Some coach that left LSU for USC came back today and he played a big part in Jacoby's recruitment when he was committed to LSU and it helps them out he's back according to rivals.

We are gonna bomb on in state talent

Gotta make sure we don't miss on the right ones.

Gray for example is highly rated but I don't think he's anything special. You can pick up a kid elsewhere like Solon Page who can give you what Gray does. Missing on Tee Higgins, however, would be a collosal failure. Same with Trey Smith.

As of now, I haven't seen enough of Jacoby to say he's a can't miss prospect. If we get Gibbs we really wouldn't miss anything.

Tee Higgins is really the only irreplaceable in state prospect. 6'5" WRs that run and catch like him don't come around very often.

More of a reference towards the "we suck at recruiting" crowd

I pretty much agree here. On paper, it would suck to miss out on Gray and Stevens, but if we land Higgins, Smith, and Gibbs, then that's good enough IMO.

We're in on comparable or better players than the top in state prospects at most positions. I'd love to have Stevens, but would be just as happy with Gibbs. Want Chandler to commit, but I'm losing no sleep if we get Akers instead. Gray will likely be buried on the depth chart at OLB until he's a junior anyway and we're in on like 20 other LBs.

Higgins and Smith are really the only two big time must gets imo. And I think we get both. I'm okay with not getting Chandler because that means we probably got Akers imo. Also we miss out on Jacoby, oh well. Gibbs is just as much, if not better player and were going to get him imo.
