'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

In defense of Stoops (who I despise his condescending attitude about everything practically), the Mixon deal did occur right after the Ray Rice thing did in 2014. NFL gave Rice a two game suspension while Stoops gave Mixon a 1 yr suspension. While the media went bat**** crazy once the Rice tape was public, I believe Stoops had already given his punishment to Mixon. NFL and Goodell set the standard initially too low and Stoops went further with his.

If the same thing happened here, there wouldn't be enough bodybags for all of the victims who would lose their job.

That "suspension" was a redshirt year so that Mixon could preserve his full 4 years of eligibility. No, Stoops didn't punish his prize 5 star freshman, he protected him like an asset. They saw video of him breaking a yoing lady's face and didn't think "he can't play here, we're going to cut him loose"....no, they went into protection/survival mode to make sure he remained viable for their program.

Contrast that with another coach you also likely despise, Steve Spurrier, who had a zero tolerance player for any player who put his hands on a female...they were immediately cut from his program.

We did then we didn't then we did again but the didn't time screwed it all up. Can apparently thank his Former HS coach for causing that mess. Been rumored that he gave less than glowing review that turned staff in another direction

From what I heard that is an understatement.

I said he'd be an idiot if he stayed. Sticking behind that one too. Stoops is garbage.

Stoops is garbage? Imagine if you were a carpenter and upon taking a well paying job I told you that you could bring your knowledge, but we were gonna change all of your terminology and ALSO instead of giving you the tools that you think are the best for the job we supply you with tools we already have and ask you to do your best with them.

He should've been able to bring in his own guys, then at least we could judge HIM instead of doing what we're doing now.

He's saying Stoops at OU. Not Shoop at UT.

The Beech coach talked bad about Jacob once he left Beech. The thing is that should never he a bearing on a true eval of a kid or the talent or lack thereof vs film. UT offered 1st was in a very good position, and @ that time Crabtree loved Jacob and he was their TE and Mlb. Once he left for East because Crabtreeput his son in front on Jacob, he labeled Jacob the bad guy. This kid was recruirtable to a school in almost all Power 5 but he got slow played by the home school because of his fmr coach primarily.

i do care about losing this prospect.... I wish he could have a change of heart. can you put in a good for for the Vols D1?

A SI writer dogcussing Stoops in a recent article lumped him in with us. Nowhere close to the same...requires facts.

THe problem is we really do not know, and will never know all of what happened here due to the settlement.

We know the basics. And all of the fluff. Like Lil John and Peyton Manning. As far as coaches oversight. the worst they could hurl was the "traitor" dispute. They can't point to one player that Butch allowed to practice, much less play with investigations incomplete. None played at Tennessee again after charges. Mankajoula under Cuonzo was guilty...never officially charged and transferred. That's why I personally am at peace with the money doled out...even tho his victim didn't benefit.

And now you see how Butch recruits, takes some slack jawed yokels word over actually watching the film and evaluating the kid himself. If the former coach is the only guy you talk to them you are not doing your job, terrible Miss on a position we have been brutal at, right here in our own backyard, complete joke.

...what happened with Tennessee and the 4-star prospect? The Vols were one of the first schools to offer Phillips in 2014. He visited Tennessee several times, attending a couple camps including junior day. “They were the second school to offer me my sophomore year,” Phillips told SEC Country. “I went on a visit and I really liked it and stuff like that.”

But not long thereafter, communication between the two parties stopped. Almost completely. Phillips was leaning toward leaving the state, while Tennessee wasn’t sure if the 6-foot-4, 235-pound prospect was actually a linebacker. He didn’t visit for more than a year, and he barely talked to Tennessee linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen.

After assessing his early senior season film and shuffling their own defensive board, the Vols reached back out to Phillips this fall. His stock had continued to rise...He attended the Florida game and had a great time, but by then, it was already too little, too late for the Vols. “Throughout the years you really kind of see what people truly are, and I just didn’t really feel comfortable there,” Phillips said of Tennessee. “Just hearing what other people had to say about them, too, I didn’t feel comfortable.”

Don't like that last sentence at all...

Yep, but for every quote like that, there are 10 positives regarding the staff

That make it to Volnation at least.

We really have no idea or way of knowing what the actual ratio of positive to negative statements about the staff by prospects, players, former players, coaches from other schools, etc are.

You aren't going to get a positive quote from a kid our staff stopped recruiting for a year. There are plenty of others that have been quoted as saying that the staff continues to show that they are wanted.

I understand that but the "suspension" was really just a redshirt year

Mixon was never going to play 4 yrs of college ball. He sat out an entire yr. call it redshirt, etc but he didn't play. Stoops didn't dismiss him cause he didn't want to play against him later. Dozens of schools would have offered him afterwards.

Easy for SOS to say that at age 69, with a fat contract. Would he at age 40? SOS may not play guys who hit women but he played his share of thieves, drug users, etc. He's no better than any others.
