'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

Strong words for a guy simply doing his best to coach a team. Is he the best coach in the world? No. But to me a fraud would imply he's collecting a check and not putting much effort into his job. And that's not true. If some of you former players truly wanted the program to do well, you guys wouldn't spend every waking minute undermining the guy trying to make Tennessee relevant again. Let him succeed or fail on his own. No need to nudge him off the cliff.

LittleVol is not a former player.

Two things hurt us in the Jacob Phillips recruitment. First was listening to the head coach at Beech after Phillips transferred. This is the primary reason for backing off originally. The second was our early evaluation which led to belief that he could not play linebacker here. Phillips had very stiff hips which hindered his lateral movement. His trainers helped him improve significantly in this area before his senior year. Now his lateral movement is top notch allowing him to react to plays sideline to sideline much quicker. Sometimes coaches miss on early evals because player progression is hard to predict. No way to know what type of college career he will have but easy to see why we missed on this one.

True but you don't bring out the recipe (formula) to make egg salad without eggs (quality wins). I would very much like some egg salad next cycle.

Since we don't have a bunch of quality wins, we must not have been able to get good players. Which means we can never have quality wins. Can you see this assumption is pretty easily dismissed? Developing a winning program takes some time. It's unfortunate but that's the reality. Get some pieces to the puzzle, catch a couple of breaks one season, then you belong.

A good coach can get those quality wins with lesser talent and star rating, but since we are talking about recruiting top talent from all over America and not just the instate favorites, quality wins is required. Another ingredient is producing NFL caliber players because after all the goal of these recruits is to play in the league. Now that we are producing NFL players all we have to do is get those quality wins and we can recruit at a high level nationally and not rely on our backyard. So if you want to dismiss the importance of quality wins as it relates to national recruiting go ahead. You are the one who made the assumption that we don't have good NFL type of players in our backyard. Without the quality wins we even miss out on some of our top in-state talent.

I made no such assumption. Not sure what you are referring to. My point was simply that great players may come because you win or for some other reason, and that you take good players and catch some breaks to have those good seasons. To say you cannot win until you get great players and you cannot get great players until you win seems to say we shouldn't bother, we are forever doomed.

He claims to be.

I've never seen him say he was a former UT player, just that he played college football. I do however believe he would like people to think he is a former UT player.

Wouldn't change my opinion of him one way or the other though. His opinions are just as, if not more, far fetched as many others on here IMO. Of course his "I'm a lone wolf and do and say what I want on here" comment was quite entertaining and laughable, so I will give him props for his comedic ability...even if he was trying to be serious and bad assed.

I never said or inferred that, just winning is the biggest factor in recruiting. Some come because of early playing time, some because of scheme, some because of family ties to the school, some because of a coach, some because their cousin or friend is on the team, some come because of academics and training facilities, and some because it's their state school. Of all those factors winning has the strongest correlation with recruiting success.

We could use the other ut as an example. Remember when they were winning they got most of the top instate talent and now they are not winning thus they are not recruiting well. The instate talent is going to tamu and other places. UGA is ranked #3 in recruiting now but they get most their players from the great talent pool in Georgia.

I'm really not trying to argue with you on this. When talking about recruiting (instate or out of state) winning is the biggest factor.

Let's catch some breaks and get some quality wins and they will be lining up to come play for us.

Maybe graduated from EA Sports U. I've seen people speculate based on his VN name. I don't recall him ever posting that he was, but I have yet to see him clarify that he's not who some think he is.

This.

That's two 5 star calibet In-State
Guys we missed on.

Sucks.

But Ignot is a damn fine MLB. I'm okay with not getting Phillips.

With Chandler and Trey Smith as Vols is certainly eases the blow.

All in all, we've got some pretty talented guys in 2017 class.

Bumphis
Locklear
Page
Reid
Bennett
Jackson
LeBruzza
Murphy
Ignot
Chandler
Smith are all good SEC prospects.

Some from that group will make All Conference teams.

It's a talented class

Why isn't the kid interested in us?

Coaches passed early on due to bad information and probably not enough evaluation on their own part. They tried to get back in a couple months ago but I think the hiatus in our recruitment caused him to move on from us as well.

With Ignont committed, frankly, idgaf about the staff not recruiting Phillips hard. They thought he would outgrow the position. He still may. Staff very comfortable with Ignont (who is a baller) in this scheme. What's the issue here?
