'17 TN LB Jacob Phillips

With Ignont committed, frankly, idgaf about the staff not recruiting Phillips hard. They thought he would outgrow the position. He still may. Staff very comfortable with Ignont (who is a baller) in this scheme. What's the issue here?

Nothing except quality depth potentially just my opinion

People here want to see stars. You know this.

Sure sure I'm not saying Phillips isn't a monster, he is. Will start early in college. But with Ignont committed it's the closest thing to a wash we have so I can't really even be upset. For the longest time staff was convinced he wouldn't be a good fit in our scheme. He'll be a beast and this thread will be bumped after big games and when/if he gets drafted but I think we can likewise point to Ignont when he has success. For us it's scheme and fit and Ignont fits it perfectly

Agreed. Ignont is a great player. The only reason Phillips is an issue is because he is in state. If he wasn't nobody would care.

He's a 5 star player who happens to be instate imo. If he wasn't nearly as talented and well thought of then nobody would care.

Yeah. He is gonna be good and this is probably one the coaches would like a do over with but we have a perfectly good LB committed that everyone should be excited about IMO.

We lose out on talented and well thought of 5*'s all the time. Along with every other school. The only difference here is that he is in state. People get too worked up over that part. Would it be great to have him? Yes. Are we a sinking ship, as some are saying, because we didn't get him? No.

I'll take Ignont and be happy.

I agree. I just do believe so many care about losing this guy first because he appears to be an elite 5star player and secondly because he's in Nashville, arguably our most important recruiting area. That being said, you're right, Ignont is a very good get and all staffs are gonna miss at times.

Ignont is better for us imo. He's going to be a great player!

That and the fact he's got 5 stars

He only just got his fifth star. Until today he was just a four star. I'd say the difference between him and Ignont is negligible. The only reason some of you have bunched up manties is because he is in state. Period. Ignont will be great in our defense. Good luck to Jacob where ever he ends up.

I agree on Ignont's talent, he may be a star here, but it's not a Ignont vs. Phillips issue, it's why Butch and staff missed on Phillips

It is either they got bad info, missed on the evaluation, or thought he wouldn't fit the D. Maybe a combination of those things. It is silly to argue though. They have very similar offer lists and both play great. The coaches might have missed on Phillips but they got the evaluation on Ignont right. So it's a wash.

What is ironic about all of this is that Butch's MO is to offer guys early who they think will improve and become great prospects. They take commitments early with the condition that they get better, and then people ***** about why our staff takes them. The player either becomes a great prospect (like Page) or they get dropped (and we have to hear it from the peanut gallery).

I said months ago that their early evaluation on Phillips must be that he didn't fit as a LB at UT and wasn't athletic enough to be a DE. They weren't sure he could improve when it seems like he did. Did they miss? Maybe. But they also hit on others. Just ironic that people criticize this when also criticizing the method of taking guys early. Can't have it both ways. But that is the norm around here.

Anyone making a big deal about this when we landed a highly touted ILB is looking for a reason to be upset.

I agree SD.

If the coaches could go back and change their early eval, would they? Most likely. They got bad info from his former coach and thought he would outgrow the position. Sometimes Evals just don't work out. **** happens. Thankfully, we have a more than solid LB class even without him.
