'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

While Clemson and Ole Miss will fight for this kid, I agree that it will probably come down to Bama and Vols. Clemson will still have Mitch Hyatt at that left tackle spot for a year after Smith would get there, and Ole Miss will have Greg Little at left tackle for a couple years after Smith would sign. One concern I see is his childhood favorite, Bama can pitch for him to come in and immediately compete for that left tackle position once Cam Robinson leaves for the pros next year. Could be a tough sell for Butch to pitch him redshirting for a year behind Richmond or Hall until they leave for the draft. With that said, Butch did it with Richmond, I'll keep my hopes up that he can do the same with Trey.

First, I'm a huge fan of Trey Smith. I think there's little doubt he's a top 100 guy.

The knock on him is the competition. He doesn't play anyone close to his size and so it's hard to get an accurate eval from him. He's had an ankle injury this spring so he hasn't been able to camp.

But, really surprised someone has him at No. 1 overall. Again, no brainer a top 100 guy with loads of potential.

As for what's the latest: Tennessee, Alabama and Clemson are still the frontrunners and they will all likely get official visits. I think Michigan and Ohio State will be in the mix as well.

Tennessee is doing everything they can to recruit the guy. Everything. So, it's just a matter of time. He's an early enrollee and wants to take all five officials. He'll be back in the summer for sure.

I disagree. I think Smith could be great, but analysts comparing him to Tunsil are absurd.

Smith has Tunsil potential but not sure he would be ready for a Tunsil type impact day 1 like ESPN says. A lot can happen in a year to get him there but not sure the type of competition he faces at USJ will have him ready for SEC day 1. If he was an EE that would help. I've heard from people that have watched him often that potential is limitless but he has things to work on in terms of strength and consistent mean streak.

From last year ... this will be a battle with Alabama and UT till the end.

“It’s funny, I always grew up an Alabama fan,” he said. “From kindergarten, actually. My kindergarten teacher, her son was a manager for Alabama and somehow he got me into the locker room and I saw my first collegiate game at Alabama. Of course crimson was basically red in my mind, so it was my favorite color. My favorite animal was the elephant…”

Locking down home grown talent is essential, ala LSU, Ohio St, Etc.

I think he knows this, as we all do... But for some reason, if anyone says they want our elite instate talent, then it some how means we dont want out of state talent. It also somehow means that they want to take lesser talented in state kids over higher rated out of state recruits just because they are from Tennessee. Only Leb does that, and he's not even serious.
Locking up instate talent has many present and future benefits. It's really not that hard.

The number one player in the state needs to be a Vol. The number one player in the state who is also the number player in the nation CERTAINLY needs to be a Vol. I wouldn't want any team to come in and poach our top talent. We haven't been given reason to doubt Butch so far and I believe he pulls Higgins and this kid personally. Butch is relentless on the trail and us protecting Neyland Stadium this year will put to rest any doubts the recruits have about coming to Tennessee. An SEC Title will allow Butch to sweet talk any kid he wants. He isn't doing so bad as it is. We've sold playing time and the tradition of Tennessee up to this point, and it's produced some very good classes. I can't wait until we can sell actual winning. I'm not overly concerned with us having the number one class necessarily, but it is great to be in the discussion. And winning big this year will put us right there in my opinion.
