'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

Sign 8-10 instate; 10-12 out of state.........ballpark yearly #'s per John Majors

With all due respect to Coach Majors, and however many decades have passed between that quote and today,

"Field the strongest team possible, and when those players are within Tennessee, build with them. If not, go elsewhere."-nicksjuzunk

Well, just to throw some gasoline on a dwindling fire... do you question Josh Dobbs's commitment to the Vols? He isn't from Tennessee. Neither are Kahlil MacKenzie, or Alvin Kamara or... how many dozen could we name? They aren't from Tennessee, but I don't question their commitment to the team. Why would anyone think they give less effort than a local kid?

Seriously? Your response has literally zero to do with the conversation. No one is saying Georgia born kids are lesser Vols than TN kids. The debate is over how pivotal it is to the growth of UT's program to keep instate talent. No one is advocating that we not recruit the Kahlils of the world simply because they go to school in CA. We're merely saying it would be best if the Tee Higgins of the world played college ball at UT. I hardly think that argument is a stretch...

Yes, Coach Fulmer went in that direction as well. At time of the Majors quote from 30 years ago, the state of Tennessee definitely didn't produce enough elite high school talent to provide much margin for error.

With Rutherford County explosion of talent, we really should get at least 6-8 instates per year.

But, with that said, I do agree with you for now.

Hot dang.. It really has been 30 years ago?. damn I'm old

Don't agree. UT has always built their teams with out of state talent. You get the best, regardless of zip code. Most kids want to leave whatever state they are in to go to college, that's reality. I know it may be a controversial opinion but its the poorer states where the kids stay close to home, hence the LA and MS kids staying close.

And TN has used top instate talent like I mentioned before....al wilson, john henderson, travis stephens, chad clifton just to name a very few. Find a way to keep the best instate. I dont care if you agree with my opinion or not

I think we cleared this up a couple pages back. It's all good now.

People also tend to overlook one of the reasons why TN has all of a sudden (last 3 yrs or so) started putting out more talent.

Just because these kids have TN beside their name in a thread does not mean they were born here. Middle TN is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. We have become the melting pot of America. A lot of these guys grew up fans of other teams because their families (or they themselves) were fans of those teams because they lived in those states. They didn't become TN fans just because they moved here.

That's really only a handful of recruits... Most of our Tennessee talent is born and raised here... by far. There will always be some kids, like Stevens, that you described, but it's really never gonna be that many.

I have not seen any accurate data on the percentage of the top rated football players in Tennessee are born in Tennessee. I would guess that the percentage is less now than it was 10 years ago. However, that does not mean that CBJ can not sign almost all of the Tennessee he really wants.
