'17 TN OT Obinna Eze (Memphis commit)

pretty sure that scheme of pulling a Guard/backside player is part of this OL talent and what separates it from 2013. who was it this year that said they had never seen a blocking scheme like ours? Bama maybe? only way that scheme works is off the talent of our players.
That's one way to look at it. The other way is that our coaches (most likely Debord, since we never ran many of those types of plays before he came to town) looked at our OL, realized they're not going to open up very many rushing lanes blowing people off the ball or running straight at them, and drew up plays to take advantage of the athleticism of our ball carriers while minimizing the weakness of our OL.

I agree that our 2013 OL wouldn't have been able to run many of the plays Debord drew up for our run game in 2016. But then again, I don't think they'd need them. Debord would've figured out how to make best use of their strengths.

yeah that Clemson O line sucked too. and just how good was our 2013 line against Bama

Tennessee vs. Alabama - Team Statistics - October 26, 2013 - ESPN

Tennessee vs. Alabama - Team Statistics - October 24, 2015 - ESPN

so despite a "clearly inferior OL" we put up almost as many yards, more first downs, more rushing yards. and thats after factoring in giving up 59 million sacks in the 2015 game. and once again oh yeah 2 true freshman getting their first against bama. when did the 2013 line have to do that?

and oh yeah we doubled our TD production (by a whole whopping 1)

Hurd and Kamara > Neal and Lane
Jr. Josh Dobbs > Jr. Worley and Fr. Josh Dobbs

Pointing out how close those stats are actually hurts your argument. The fact that we had freshmen playing is a good point, but the fact that their performance was basically on par with the guys ahead of them kind of hurts that point as well.

I get this argument, but I'm still not taking Butch's guys over that 2013 OL until 2017 at the earliest.

If I had a pro style offense, then I would agree with you. But, that is not what we have and why those guys did so well with pass protection but had trouble on some short yardage plays. And speaking with some who would know, being their last year and with what was at stake pro wise, some did not care to learn a new O that was not really suited for not only what they were used to but built for as well.

Yep..that's a good argument. But we have been telling him that from the first post, and he does not care. Also..Tiny was shot. He tried, but the poor guy just couldn't move very well. Also that line was not conditioned well, which just compounds the whole not suited for the Butch offense. Butch was going to install his basic scheme that year no matter what. It was the right thing to do. There was no sense running a totally different blocking scheme just to win an extra game that year. It would have just set the install back a year.

I never denied that. But when I bring up the fact that despite this they still performed at an extremely high level, higher than we're likely to see for quite some time, the only two responses anybody seems to bring is either

1. They didn't get a yard against Vandy! (as if that alone was the reason we lost that game)
Or
2. But they weren't suited to this style of offense! (which actually makes their performance more impressive when you think about it).

The whole thing has become circular. Of course they were more suited to a different style of offense. But despite playing on a team with sub-par skill players, being in year 1 of installing a completely new offense, and having a LT with bum knees, they still performed at a damn high level. The only points I've been trying to make are that the 2013 OL unit was undervalued and that we're not likely to see a higher level of performance for quite some time.

Only way to figure it out is with what Debord does in the future. but I am thinking we will still see pulling linemen in 17 and beyond.

how does pointing out the stats hurt? Our terrible line in 15 set records. yeah it has a lot to do with the guys running the ball and the scheme; but you can't downplay the line itself. especially when this line is supposed to be clearly inferior.

A healthy Robertson > Jack Jones. A healthy ? < Hall. even with Hall not being fantastic I think he was the best RT we had. we will see what the surgery does with that.

I wasn't trying to say that we won't see that. Rather that with a different skill set at OL, we'd probably see a different blocking scheme.

"Nashville offensive lineman Obinna Eze is feeling more comfortable around Tennessee of late. After camping with Tennessee in June, the tall and athletic Nigerian is said to have a greater comfort level around the program. He also liked how offensive line coach Don Mahoney coached him up at the Nashville camp. The Davidson Academy product is still considering several schools and he has very little knowledge of the history surrounding several of the programs and is taking the recruiting process more by feel and less by who wins and loses."

Anybody that says all our targets are either committed to UT or leaning elsewhere is nuts. There are many, many targets out there that aren't even close to deciding.

Because they are waiting to see if we deliver this year, like we are supposed too.

Yeah so much happens between now and NSD. At this time last year, nobody knew who the heck Kongbo was. Byrd was a Cane not even in our thought process. Callaway was a UGA lean I think. I don't recall if JG was committed yet or not but there was a point where most thought Rutgers or Ohio st. Yet they are currently enrolled at TN

Exactly, how many players did we pick up at the tail end of recruiting season? I can think of Byrd, Callaway, Latrell and of course Richmond! Richmond was our Higgins of last class, everyone thought he was gone.

I'll admit I was butt hurt when Higgins pulled his act but I am not going to worry anymore until it is very late January. Butch has proved he can get it done and I will trust him until I have a reason not to.

Should have read your post before posting mine a few posts later! Sorry about saying almost exactly what you just stated, so I agree with you!

Richmond was in the '15 class.

"Caught up with Obinna Eze and he said in his mind he's narrowed things and he didn't want to reveal those details, but he did say Tennessee is still in it.

He and coach Mahoney continue to talk and he talks with several players as well. He may make a decision before the season but he could wait to take official visits."

Sounds promising

Richmond was 2015 class, not 2016. He redshirted last year.
