I think it's hilarious how Mahoney gets all the blame when the Oline sucks but when it is good all the praise goes to Debord.
I still think that 2013 unit didn't get a fair shake, all things considered. Hindsight being 20/20, with Tiny playing on bum knees they were one of the best pass blocking teams in school history and produced our best ground game since the Fulmer days despite being completely one dimensional (with average at best RB talent) and lacking any true and consistent passing and receiving threats. Fans seemed to hold it against them that they didn't completely take over games and lead us to win more games, but they performed to expectations IMO. If the 2013 team had the offensive skill position talent we have now, they'd set all the rushing records they wanted and fans would be calling them the best in school history. Instead, they took a lot of the blame for the offenses poor talent at skill positions. On the surface of it, it's easy to understand...
-year 1, 2013, we had studs/NFL players all across the OL....it was generally considered that they underachieved....very good pass blocking, not good at all run blocking
-year 2, 2014, OMG. Lotta youth, but they were God awful, looked like an OVC or MAC OL
-year 3, along comes DeBord and the OL, despite having to plug in some true freshmen at times, like the year before, made very big strides on the way to helping set a new school rushing record.
Now, of course there are other factors (eg, Thomas moving to his natural position at center), but on the face of it, it looked like the OL was of nightmarish proportion with Mahoney alone, only to improve greatly with the arrival of DeBord. There's probably a lot of truth to that, even if it's not quite that cut and dry.

Edit: not to mention it was year one in a completely new, up tempo system.

the biggest reason I don't consider the 13 line great is 3rd & 4th down vs Vandy. All NFL talent can't pick up a yard vs Vandy? That's want to, that's not coaching or scheme or talent. that's want to and they didn't have it.
1. Shoop vs Bajakian. I know which one I'm taking in that scenario.
2. If we had the RBs to go with that OL, they convert the first down. No way Hurd doesn't make it through in that situation.
