'17 TN RB/CB Chase Hayden (Arkansas commit)

In recruiting, you have players who play the recruiting game, camp, and wait to commit. Those players typically end up getting significant bumps in ratings if all goes well. On the flip side, you have players who know where they're going and don't bother to play the recruiting game, camp, etc. These players get good rankings, but rarely see the significant bumps in rankings unless there's some extenuating circumstances. The cardinal sin with the recruiting sites is not doing interviews.

So here's the question: would you rather have a recruit commit early, shut it down, and stay a 3* or have them wait, camp, and commit in January as a 4*?

Assuming the kid has talent worthy of a scholarship either way, I'd rather have him commit early and shut it down.

I bet CBJ doesn't worry too much about what the recruiting services think about a player. And I bet he wouldn't jeopardize signing someone to get their star rating up. If coach wants him, take the commit as soon as the player is suing to give it. I can't believe any professional would tell a player who they want to go camp elsewhere so they can get an extra star. That would be foolish. CBJ>24/7

Stars, ratings, offers...none of that means jack s$hit after he commits. Nothing. It's go time from commitment point forward and nothing else matters

I'm not asking about our coaches. I take it your answer would be to take the earlier commit?

Double post.

very well said...you make a lot of sense in your argument. Good call!

I'm firm on Hayden...He will be a vol. I would very much like to add cam Akers or Damian to the fold. I always seem to mix up Aaron Hayden and jay graham. Hayden came first right?

Hayden and Stewart were there before Garner then Graham.

Hayden 5'7" tall and 175 lbs. more of a Kamara type back. I like these big running backs like, James Stewart, Reggie Cobb, Jamal Lewis, and jalen Hurd. Hurd is probably the tallest of them all. They run straight up and take a pounding, but they will move that pile and have break away speed.

Yes. What coache do you suggest would delay taking a commit hoping the player could get more stars by visiting other places?

I never suggested that at all. No coach would ever do that. I was merely asking from a fan perspective based on a hypothetical scenario. Basically asking would you rather have a 3* now and on signing day, or would you rather have the same player sign as a 4* on signing day? The intent is to see what's more important to the fan base. Security now and later or insecurity now in exchange for more pub later?

I can't find anywhere where Hayden is listed at 5'7", he is listed at 5'10" and 5'11" everywhere.

Correct he is not 5'7 - Unless he has shrunk since I stood next to him (I'm 5'11).

FWIW Kamara is 210 lbs. Now John Kelly is only about 5'9, but he's a solid 200 plus pounds. Hayden is much taller than Pig, unless Pig is only 5'3......

Hayden's last game was 1994 and Jay Graham played in the 1995 season.

It really depends on the player but I understand what you're asking. If a kid is looking for more exposure then it's best for him to stay uncommitted, go to all the camps and take all his visits. He's only going to get one chance to do this (ideally) so he might as well make sure he's making the right choice. Some guys don't take it seriously and make it a game- those are the guys that you put your name in the hat and hope for the best. Other guys are give it the due process and genuinely torn between schools- they're young and they realize it's a big decision. Those are the guys that you stick with until the end. Honestly, nothing really matters until they sign in February so, while it's nice to have some commitments now, you never know whose gonna be a vol until they sign the papers.

I think Chase wants to be a Vol. I think UT wants to have a place for him. In the end, both are going to do what's best for them.

Says TN interest in him has picked up he feels, raves about UT like he always does. Liked what CBJ said about staying in state. Will visit Ark soon, is getting most attention from UT, Ark, SC, and Meatchicken, wants to announce in summer

“it was good,” hayden said during sunday’s national playmakers academy camp at alcoa high school, just a short drive from tennessee’s campus. “before the spring game started, i got to talk to coach (butch) jones, and i had fun doing that. Then, i just went in the locker room and started talking to a couple players, and i went back out and watched the game.

“it was just great. (jones) was saying, ‘this is our state,’ and how we need to come represent the state of tennessee and stuff. He said he was thankful that i came up there.”

“they seem so much more athletic than they were the past couple years,” hayden said. “you can just see it. The line is big now. They’ve got the athletes, the speed and stuff.”
