'17 TN RB Ty Chandler (UT signee)

From Barton Simmons:

"Just talked to Ty Chandler at the Army Bowl check-in. I'll have a small update later on. I thought the most interesting thing he said was about the Cam Akers recruitment. I know there were some on here that had asked how a Cam commitment would affect Chandler, worried that it might scare him off. Well, I asked him who he was recruiting while down here in San Antonio:

"I wanted to get my man Cam on here with me but he went on and committed

"I just don't feel like one man can do it by himself. I feel like he would’ve been a great partner to do it with. A great guy. I like his stye of play and how he runs the ball."

This isn't remotely surprising coming from Ty. That's just his personality. Extremely selfless teammate. He sounded genuinely excited about playing alongside Cam.

He told me he's not planning on taking visits anywhere but Tennessee and he's solid."

Love guys like this. I wish we had 2 more of him. So glad he chose to play for the good guys.

Alabama RB's adjusted well. Scarbrough dropped 180 yesterday. Scheme is overrated

Scarborough was a 2014 guy who had plenty of time to adapt and wait behind other RBs though.

Chandler will have to adjust to a new scheme (as well as a higher level of play and college life in general) and be able contribute next fall.

Pretty sure Alabama didnt run the zone read until this year with Hurts.

Ah my bad. I thought you were referencing his adjustment from high school to college ball.

As for Bama and the zone read, they ran a bit in 2014 (forgot the QBs name that year, but he could run a bit so Kiffin threw some wrinkles in for him) but not nearly as much as in 2016 with Hurts.

I agree with your point about scheme being overrated (at last in regard to RBs). I just worry that people might be expecting too much from Chandler as a freshman given that he'll be pretty far behind Kelly and CFA in regards to experience running out of zone read looks.

I have no doubt he'll get it done for us eventually. I just think that it is something worth keeping an eye on and something we should mindful of if Chandler has some freshman struggles.

Agreed on Chandler adjusting. Kinda throwing a little shade toward Hurd and the scheme argument. Backs can excel in the ZR, they need to buy in

Sounds like he has the heart of a true Volunteer!

“i feel like tennessee is home to me,” chandler told 247sports’ william wilkerson on monday following his east team’s first practice for saturday’s u.s. Army all-american bowl. “it’s a place i like being and going to all the time. I feel like it's a great place with a great staff.”

“i think butch is a great guy. He’s brought a lot to the table,” said chandler, a four-star prospect who’s ranked the nation’s no. 73 overall player and no. 5 running back in the 247sports composite for the 2017 class. “i like what he is doing. I like what all the coaches are doing.”

chandler said he also liked what he saw from the vols on friday during their 38-24 win over nebraska in the franklin american mortgage music city bowl.

“i feel like they played a great game and got a great win,” he said. “i'm excited for them and excited to get up there and start competing.”

while chandler is in texas with dozens of other top prospects for this week’s all-star game, he said he’s trying to do a little bit of recruiting for tennessee, although he doesn’t have his sights set on any particular players.

“i’m trying to whisper tennessee to anyone i can — not just one specific person,” he said. “just trying to spread the ut love.”

When it was all said and done, why did you ultimately commit to Tennessee?

Chandler: “I felt like, ‘Why not Tennessee?’ It’s close to home. I have a great opportunity. I love the coaching staff up there. I feel like it’s the right spot for me. It felt like home. That’s why I’m sticking with it.”

Any word on how this kid is performing this week? I have seen a clip or two of him breaking a big run and speed on a wheel route but besides that nothing.

After the Top-100 prospect rushed for more than 2,200 yards and 39 touchdowns to lead Montgomery Bell Academy to the state championship, Chandler has come to Texas, put his head down and worked. The humble, hulking tailback has split reps with a pair of 5-star runners, but Chandler has held his own.

about 90 of those should have been called back due to the hold on Cam "Dealer" Robinson. Of course, the refs missed it.

Maybe because Chandler should be a 5* too

Remember Rivals, ESPN, and 247 all had Saquon Barkley ranked outside the top 100 players in the 2015 class. And the guy is now being talked about as a top 5 pick in 2018.

These recruiting guys don't know anything. Ty Chandler is as good as any RB in the 2017 class. He's a 5 star talent IMO.

Offensive holding can be called on almost every run play. Stop trying to downplay Bo's accomplishment. Its just sour grapes. Dude is a stud RB.

If Kelly can do it Chandler can do it.

Hurd could do it until he decided to quit trying.

If you are a good running back you are a good running back. This "system fit" crap is vastly overstated.

Wish I could like this post more than one time. I've been saying this same thing since all this fuss with Hurd and the system came up last year. If you have the ability to find a seam you will thrive in a spread type system. If you require a lead blocker in hopes of getting to the second level behind him you are likely not laterally mobile enough to be really effective anyway.

Yep, he is a tremendous running back. But why don't the officials penalize the obvious holding fouls? Barnett was basically tackled all game long.

Rewatching the game, Barnett was literally held nearly every snap. That is not an exaggeration. These weren't holds that were hard to recognize either. They were blatant holds right in front of the officials and not one was called. It was almost like they agreed before the game to not call holds. He was tackled on 2 or 3 plays with no call, horse collared twice with no call, unbelievable how bad that officiating was to ignore those obvious holds. Without them Barnett may have had 5 sacks. He was dominating
