In the back of his mind, Tennessee wide receiver commitment KD Nixon knew the Five-Star Challenge presented by Under Armour was this weekend at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
But, as a backup option, he knew getting the last minute call was unlikely.
That all changed Friday morning when Nixons phone rang letting him know someone had to miss and there was a wide receiver spot open and he was the recipient of the invite.
I was about to go work out, Nixon said. When Nick (Krueger) texted me I was about to go to the school to go to work out. He texted me at 9:30.
I had been asking for this and God blessed me with it. Now, I just have to showcase my skills and enjoy the moment.
But, setting up last-minute travel wasnt the only obstacle Nixon had to maneuver. Scheduled to fly out of Dallas Love Field Airport, a shooting in the morning delayed his flight some six hours.
And despite missing parts of the first day, Nixon is excited to be competing.
It was hectic. It took me six hours to get on the flight, Nixon said. But, I finally got here and I got here late and I missed all the fun with everybody else. But, its all business at the end of the day so Im good with that.
While he was waiting to board his flight Friday in Dallas, he did receive a call from Tennessee coaches Butch Jones and Zach Azzanni. The call meant a lot to the 5-foot-8, 175-pound receiver.
I have a great relationship with coach Jones and coach Azzanni. They called me before I came here. They were excited for me and let me know that, Nixon said. Its great that they would call me and care that much about me and call me and congratulate me when they were busy and had camp.
