Ask Auburn what they think of the AAC.

My point is this, recruiting at a high level is important but coaching players up is more important. A group of 3 stars with a great coach is better than a group of 5 stars with a bad coach.

You need both to win at the highest level.

true

Purdue got alot better in 1 season just bc of scheme and development also.

but yeh UCF was no joke. AU beats Alabama and UGA but then gets boat raced by UCF haha.

I see "boat race" doesn't mean what it used to when I first heard it years ago. Interesting.

We can talk up all the Auburn excuses in the world but fact is they got beat on a national stage by a team of 2 and 3 stars who were coached up.

Yes other teams in our conference are getting the blue chips and have great coaching staffs but us coaching up our players will give us more of a shot as opposed to good classes not getting developed.

This is correct. And it’s a process. We aren’t GA or Fla where 4 and 5 stars are seemingly on every street corner. So we have to get as many as we can, coach up our 3 stars, win some games, and THEN we will pull our share of these elite guys. May take a couple years, could start next year.

Bottom line, 2 months in is not the time to panic about cruitin

“i loved it. It was all good. I wasn't nervous. Right away it felt like home,” tillman said. “believe it or not, it was exactly how i thought it would be. They treated me like family.” the 6-3, 212 pound receiver hung out with a lot of the vols over the weekend but spent the most time with sophomore receiver marquez callaway.

“i was very comfortable from the moment i arrived,” tillman said. “i wasn't nervous about the visit but i was a little nervous meeting coach pruitt. We talked a lot today and really started building our relationship. They feel like i can help them quickly and i know they are going to make me a better player and person.”

tillman has mostly talked to offensive coordinator tyson helton since the vols first called on the final weekend before signing day. Tillman and helton got plenty of time together this weekend as the two finally put a face with a name.

“coach helton is my guy,” tillman said. “we sat together at all the dinners all weekend. We watched a lot of cut up's today. We have talked a lot about how they would use me but it was good to get to see it. It was real good to see it face to face and see how i would fit in.”

tillman leaves knoxville with no decision to make. He only leaves waiting on the time to pass to return to knoxville to move in. Tillman, who visited this weekend with his father, said the hope is to be back for the spring game in april before moving to rocky top this summer.

As tillman heads back to vegas, he said he was reassured of one thing and that was tennessee is the right place for him. “it was real cray,” tillman recalled of the sunday offer and wednesday signing nearly a month ago. “there was no regrets in signing having never been there. A lot of people wondered why i would go there without seeing it. I just knew after talking to the coaches that tennessee was the right place for me and this weekend reaffirmed it.”

“with the whole late-offer situation, it was what it was,” said tillman, who caught 37 passes for 774 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior at powerhouse bishop gorman. “but, at this point, it don’t matter now. I’m just another player on the team, and now we’re all starting fresh, so none of that high-school stuff matters no more.

“so how i’m looking at it is, whether i was recruited early or late, i’m just another player and i’ve got to compete just like everybody else. “the coaching staff believes in me 100 percent. I mean, i can understand the fans not really knowing me because of the late offer, so maybe (i could) surprise them. But as far as the coaches, i think they know what i can do.”

“they told me to come in and compete. Coach (david) johnson, the receivers coach, said to come in and compete, and how well you do is how much you’ll play. That’s basically what they said, so i’m just going in and competing. I’m not coming all the way down here to sit on the bench, so i’m going to compete for that starting job.”

he said the vols’ class of 2018 quarterback signee, jt shrout, spent “a few hours” with him when shrout traveled to las vegas in march for his sister’s soccer tournament. Tillman said he and shrout are “going to be rooming together” at tennessee. “he actually came out to vegas, and we ran a couple routes together,” tillman said of shrout. “we’re real close. And just some of the other guys, i don’t know them too well, but i’m starting to build that relationship with them as we approach going to school. But right now jt is probably the closest person i’m with right now.

“we spent a few hours together, caught up. I showed him around the facility at gorman and stuff like that, and then we just talked and threw some routes for about 45 minutes to an hour, and then he went back home. It was cool early on getting to throw with your future quarterback, so it was fun.”
