We should've moved Byrd to corner last year after Cam went down . Buchanan clearly wasn't ready then .

and Byrd was? For all we know the coaches gave it a try for a practice or 5 saw Byrd wasn't an immediate answer and left him where he was.

I think us questioning Byrd's usage need to wait till he has played out his career to know if the decision was correct. Its just premature at this point and this is coming from someone in the CB camp.

Well we had bigger issues at CB than WR last year and that was before the season started. If #12 was the No.2/No.3 man at CB we had issues...

SN: Your best athletes should always play defense. A 4.5-4.6 WR can be super productive. When your CBs run 4.5-4.6 then you have to hide them to an extent unless they are extremely skilled. CBs have to be able to run down their mistakes in coverage. And the only way to do that is with elite speed. Byrd has it and the elite athleticism for the position. Sub him in on offense for certain plays but let him play full time at CB.

They didn't, if they did Byrd wouldn't have said in interviews that he prefers to play defense. This was after the season had started.

devil's advocate...what if we get to the end, and it was wrong?

personnel this year may dictate byrd stays on offense if Wiggins and Martin hold it down.

but if Martin comes out with live bullets and more of the same with him...do we want to go to Mosely? Buchannon? Osborne? or do you give Byrd a shot?

again, good problem to have. but there's merit to the question.

personally, i think Byrd has a really good year this year at WR. and i think Martin has a nice come back year.

I agree 100%. Personally I wish the staff would stop moving players around so much and just stick them in their natural position.

eh, HS game is so different than the college game, especially in this conf. and many a player has made a position change, for the better. happens in the NFL as well.

i'm not saying this will, or should happen, but i can see it as a possibility....you could take a kid like Grant, that is a terrific football player....and develop him as a LB potentially.

we've seen TE's converted to OT, RB to LB, LB to safety and vice versa, CB to WR, and vice versa.

so to the contrary, i think it's ok to NOT pigeon hold a kid in to a spot, because that's what he played in HS. you want kids that fit a certain profile, body type, speed, length etc....and go from there.

and i know you know that.

Could've just left the 5 star talent Byrd there instead of putting him on offense to be a No.3-No.4 WR.

Never have we agreed more. Byrd will do better than 3 or 4 WR before it is over but should've been at CB and I don't really care about any reasons to the contrary.

I agree with this, BB. However, I am optimistic that Byrd will shine on offense this year. That speed, with a potentially more accurate/better touch/better timing passer this year could mean big #s in the passing game.

(Not to disparage Dobbs, because I think we will miss him this year, unfortunately.)

Not sure how that follows.

His preference has nothing to do with him actually being better at one over the other, guessing but likely, or being good enough for the coaches to move mid season. Also playing isn't practice. and after some of the crap the media has pulled in the past if words gets out he is trying out at CB but stays at WR you would have had stories saying Byrd was terrible CB because he couldn't win the job.

I've seen multiple quotes from Shoop saying that if Byrd were to be moved back to defense he would be a safety. I get that they felt like depth was weak at WR when he first arrived, but the fact that this staff would play him at safety instead of CB where he seemed to excel in HS is kinda bizarre to me. All that to say, it doesn't sound like he'll move from offense, and if he does, it's just going to be a bigger logjam at safety instead of CB like everyone on here is pining for.
