'18 FL CB Tanner Ingle (UT commit 6/19/17)

Breakerboy you're a coach so you know very well how critical push on the dline is for linebackers to be able to flow to the football. It is not possible to overstate how much it hurt for us to lose O'Brien, Tuttle and Kmac. We were plugging in defensive ends at tackle and hoping they could get the job done. Couple that with the fact that Kirkland was out 60% of the season and Reeves-Maybin was out 90% of the season and it's pretty easy to figure out why we were gassed and simply getting pushed around at the end of the regular season. Don't know if you played any college ball but if you did you also know that it's an incredible grind under normal circumstances. All I'm trying to say is that the rash of injury (and the O'BRIEN dismissal) decimated our defensive interior. The negative mouth breathers will say it's an excuse, but it's the primary reason our D sucked at the end of the regular season. It's not at all surprising to me that we were so much better defensively in our bowl game after many of the guys were able to get some rest and get their legs back under them.

Oh and btw a school like Vandy that has stayed relatively healthy and has kept a good rotation still has D1 players. It's not a mystery that they beat us in the second half of that game. We were clearly better in the first half but we looked like we were playing in mud as the game wore on. Excuses... maybe. But I've been there, done that and can tell you it's a real factor.

Also, please don't transition this conversation to strength and conditioning. We know that was an issue and it's been addressed.

The Linebackers were never physical enough for me. Even when they were free they didn't make enough plays early on. Also Jumper playing in our 4th year shows a huge problem to me. He wasn't close to being the answer but yet and still these prospects we brought in weren't developed over a 3-4 year timespan. It's not on the players and them being busts. The coaches have to demand a standard and if players aren't up to snuff then process them out. A walk-on at LB shouldn't beat out the guys we are bringing in. That's inexcusable in my eyes.

in this case of processing them out aren't you going to end up with even more walk ons playing as you need to fill even more gaps?

Great post but I can assure you, Breaker is never going to entertain the thought of him being mistaken.. Not when it comes to players, he is all knowing..

I hope that happens and we go after better LBs. This past class should be good but we can't recruit the position like we've done the first 5 years. It's the worst evaluated/developed position on the team. The secondary didn't perform well but talent isn't the problem. We were in year 4 with a walk-on starting. That's flat out mind blowing for me with those highly rated classes.

I am excited about Ignont.

How when you're recruiting a certain number every year. And you're developing them at a high level. Alabama rarely has LBs transfer. Guys like Bryant and Bates should've been able to beat Jumper out. Bryant not being able to line a defense up in year 3 was one of the worst things I've ever heard from a staff. Like how does that even happen. That's horrible coaching and standards by a certain position coach.

Stuff does happen. Clay Matthews Jr. Was a walk on starting at USC in the days they were recruiting like Bama. It's rare but not unheard of.

if you are processing guys out you have fewer players. seems we always take 2-3 or three any way. so if we start processing we are going to have fewer bodies than we did last year. we were down to 4th string last year. 1 or 2 more gone and thats walk ons playing.

I think Jumper has enough upside to be a solid LB for us, really. I'm glad he got a redshirt and will be around for an extra year.

But I do also think that a great (that's the qualifier) LB coach would've had some other guys prepared to take over for him last year.

Part of me will always wonder whether guys like Bates or Bryant just didn't have it in them to become a starter or whether they didn't get the coaching to take the next step here. Bates still has time to take the next step, of course. But it seems like most aren't taking him into account moving forward (and I'm not really either).

Bates has battled injuries since his arrival, so he's a hard case to judge. But I agree with Bryant. I expected him to make an impact here.

Agree with Bates.

There's also been some chatter from some beat writers talking about how Bates has seen the toll that a lifetime of football has taken on some family members and may not be as "bought in" in some ways as other players. Idk if that's the case or not, but if it is, I could see that too.

Bryant just did not have the..........trying to be nice...............the mind for it.

I'm glad that you said it kindly. I was thinking the same thing and while there is no reason to embarrass a young person I have never met, I do remember there were questions about him qualifying out of high school.

He may be a genius off of the field. Who knows? But not every kid coming in is going to have the mind of DKjr and there is only coach up intelligence so much. Cut Thigpen some slack.

But Bryant could hit though, couldn't he?

Yes, he could. Wish we could have seen more of it on field. And wish him well in next endeavors.

So you're telling me he couldn't learn how to line up a defense in 3 years? He shouldn't have been eligible to play then. Kid wasn't that dumb and didn't look out of place in games either.

Why cut him slack when we've had JRM and DKjr as the only good LBs under him. I can't give him a pass on that....

I always thought AJ Johnson played better in his one year under thigpen that he did any year before that. That was one credit to Thig. If players as highly rated as Bryant and Bates don't develop then that's on them. Other players (JRM) clearly developed under Thig.

So why is it only a guy like JRM developed? Is he the only guy that wanted to be good?

as much as we want to hate on Jumper Thig turned him into a decent LB. don't want him starting but turned a red head walk on into a good #2.

No idea what idea what is up with Sapp but supposedly he had been brought up to a #2 as a freshman. Thig has also had a revolving door of guys playing different posistions. Jakob and Austin Smith come to mind. no fault of thig.

I agree with u about Jumper. He made a huge jump(i know, bad pun) from 2015 to 2016. Played his a$$ off against Florida and might have laid the lick of the year in the aTm game. Imo, a very good back-up LB, don't want him starting, but 15 or so snaps a game, in the right situation is perfect
