'18 GA QB Emory Jones (Ohio State commit)

IMO Butch plays a shell game. If Guarantano out and out wins the starting nod, he may not be the IMMEDIATE starter. If Dormady gets the initial start, SJ would be less likely to bolt ala Colorado. He would have hope he could eventually beat him out. Now if Sheriron wins out of Fall camp, I think Dormady sees the writing on the wall and moves so as to not waste that redshirt year and uses it for a transfer. Of course if Dormady CLEARLY wins the spot, SJ may reevaluate. Butch tried to maximize eligibility for Dobbs and steal a year by treading water with Worley and Peterman. I doubt he goes down that road ever again.

Quite the analysis. Didn't know you were capable. :)

I wonder how much of an athlete SJ is. Could he switch positions if he doesn't win the starting job. Would he even want to?

I'd like a way to keep both.
Good point. SJ could play another position. I think he's a pretty darn good athlete. Someone here said he was a more accurate faster version of Dobbs. Can't recall who.

To be honest, I'm kind of hoping we don't have a fun QB competition next Spring. That would mean we won a lot of games by enough points that Dormady got a lot of game time reps (guessing the days of vanilla play with the back-ups is over) and solidifies himself as the starter for '17.

If that doesn't happen, then by all means, let em all compete and best man takes the reigns.

Even if he gets a ton of playing time- garbage time, not Wally Pipping Dobbs- I don't think that would solidify him as a starter.

Are you alleging that his schtick is inconsistent? :eek:hmy:

Purposefully inconsistent IMO.

I don't see that...Sheriron is too talented at QB. Be a big waste IMO. These are GOOD problems. :)

Dobbs 80 yard TD pass to Malone versus Kentucky was better. Longer throw. Better competition. And in stride for a TD.

Also Dobbs pass to Malone against South Carolina that should have been a TD was also better.

Didn't take you long to pick the Kentucky pass bc wasn't it the only one completed more than 40 yards in the air?

At this point, I don't see SJ transferring no matter the outcome. He's already made that decision once and regretted it, I think he just truly enjoys being here. Something tells me that if QD outright wins the starting job then Butch will find a way to get SJ into the game at some point to utilize his skill set. Now, whether that be as a Brent Schaeffer style backup to QD's Erik Ainge, who knows, but I just think SJ will finish out his career as a Vol.

It really is unfortunate though how you get to "know" all these kids and you want to see them all perform and excel but there is really only ever room for 1 at a time.

We really need Dobbs to get drafted in 2017. Would go a long way with future DT QBs. Butch and DeBord could show how raw Dobbs was as a freshman and how their coaching molded him into an NFL QB.

Unless he drastically improves his ability to throw the football, I see very little chance of that happening

You see little chance that Dobbs is drafted? He may not get drafted high (rounds 1-2) but he will get drafted probably in rounds 3-5. If he shows a semblance of a downfield passing game and improves accuracy, he could go higher.

...to Ohio State. I dont think taking a back-up QB from Conneticut the week after the kid indicated it would be helpful to our chances if we didn't recruit a QB this year helped.

He was going to Ohio State either way I think. There are pros and cons both way but I really think a lot of QB's and other skill players see that it will be easier to post good stats at OSU and Michigan due to strength of schedule. He is a good player but we are set at QB for the foreseeable future and recruiting will just get easier as we win more on the field. There are more fish in the pond.
