'18 GA QB Justin Fields

When I think of a program-changing QB, I think of more than someone who couldn't even win his division. Dobbs was an above average QB, but he didn't change our program. Deshaun Watson changed Clemson's program. Johnny Manziel changed A&M's program. Josh Dobbs "changed" Tennessee from a 7-6 team to a 9-4 team. Not a huge accomplishment. That isn't to say we won't miss him this season, or that he didn't accomplish a lot statistically. I just don't see him as a "program changer", but maybe that term is subjective/relative.

Clemson beat Ohio State and Oklahoma in Orange Bowls without Deshaun Watson. They won a division title over Florida State a few years before signing Deshaun Watson. They were already a great program. He simply put them over the hump and made them elite. It's not like they were having 5-7 seasons like we were before Dobbs and losing to their rival for a decade straight. I would argue Watson and Dobbs both improved their programs by the same margin. Watson took a great program and made it elite. While Dobbs took a bad program and made it good.

I doubt Deshaun Watson would have done any better if he was in the same position Dobbs was. And I have no doubt Dobbs would have done just as good as Watson if he was in the same position he was.

Manziel is a bad example to bring up. Like Dobbs he never won any titles. All he did was win a heisman which brought a lot of positive attention early on but then because of his off-field transgressions and poor behavior, I would argue he has been more of a negative for A&M than a positive.

This all day. In hindsight, the 2015 team could have won big if butch had clutch bone in his body

I'd go with a set of balls. Don't really need a 'clutch' bone as a coach. That's on the players, but the coaches do need testicular fortitude to put players in positions to use their clutch bones.

Josh Dobbs did change our program for the better. That's undeniable. He did some incredible things. With better defensive play. We could have won big.

You could have said the same about Tyler Bray. He had an amazing arm and a peanut brain, but the only way he could win a game is if his unit put up 50 points a game.

And he didn't do that against teams with a pulse.

I still see that some morons are still hating on Dobbs.

I still see some morons can't view Dobbs without going to extremes. He wasn't Mike Vick and he wasn't Joey Matthews. He was a very good college QB. Not a "program changer".

But hey, spin my words however you need to fit your "Dobbs hater" narrative.

Before Josh Dobbs we were praying to get into a bowl game. After Josh Dobbs we were ready to fire the coach for not getting the team into the Sugar Bowl or SEC Championship game.

It's undeniable he changed the program. We went from irrelevance in 2013 to being a preseason top 10 team in 2016 that was on college gameday and CBS almost every week. For good or bad we were the talk of college football the last 2 off-seasons and for the first half of last year.

I believe some people, yourself included, were ready to fire the coach long before 'After Josh Dobbs' occurred.

Your right. He wasn't Mike Vick. In my opinion, he was better than Vick. Certainly much more polished as a thrower.

Let me also be clear on my opinion of Josh Dobbs. He was a very good QB. He will never be as good as Manning. He is better than Tee Martin was. I think Ainge and Clausen are probably on the same level as Dobbs.

Oh and fore someone goes nuts about me saying I think Dobbs is better than Martin, yes I remember Martin got a National Championship ring. He also had a ton more talent around him than Dobbs ever did. I further believe that with that level of talent around him, Dobbs might have been mentioned with the all-time greats to ever play in Knoxville.

You proved you have no clue what you are talking about as soon as you said Dobbs was better than Vick. I love Dobbs as much as anyone, but that's just ridiculous.

Do I want Vick to walk my dog? No. But I sure as heck want 20-26 year old Vick QBing my football team.

Beyond your first paragraph, which is completely asinine, I agree with most of your post.

As for Clausen, Ainge, Dobbs, I'd probably take Clausen (my favorite Vol QB not named Peyton) over the other two, but Dobbs/Ainge are very comparable talents. Dobbs the better runner and athlete, Ainge the better passer. That said, Dobbs is closer to Ainge as a passer than Ainge is to Dobbs as a runner, so I may give the edge to Dobbs there if forced to make a choice.

Ainge > Dobbs imo. Not even close.

When Josh Dobbs becomes a legend in the NFL you'll appreciate how good he was here. The guy made us a great offense without an offensive line or receivers that could catch the ball.

Once he gets some talent around him at the next level he will prove to everyone just how good he was here.

Casey Clausen was a better QB than Dobbs.

LOL. When you see how much better Dobbs is in the NFL than Clausen you'll realize how dumb this statement was.

Clausen played on arguably the most talented teams in Tennessee history during a time in which the SEC was less competitive than it is now. Dobbs played on a Tennessee program that was rebuilding in an SEC that is much stronger.

To even compare the two is laughable. Dobbs is world's better than Clausen.

How would better talent around him in the NFL prove he was good here?

As a passer, no doubt. They played in totally different systems so it's difficult to make a complete apples to apples comparison. Dobbs running ability in his offense can't be discounted. I think Dobbs in the Cutcliffe/Clawson offense would be more successful than Ainge in the DeBord offense overall. JMO, and completely hypothetical.

How is me having a realistic, objective perspective about Josh Dobbs' Tennessee career make me unappreciative of him? I have said we likely miss him this year and that he was a very good college QB. Just because I don't think he's the next "NFL legend" doesn't mean I don't appreciate him.

Took his bait. :)

Once again your need to have an opinion is only overshadowed by it being wrong. Dobbs was a great player. CC was the most clutch QB in the history of this program. Just reaffirms my suspicion that you've been a fan of this program since about 2009.
