'18 GA RB Anthony Grant (FSU signee)

I think the kid is better than Tom Smith, but its worth the analysis.
No offense to Tom Smith but I think/hope the days of recruiting those type players are over. Dixon looks elite and like a slasher but Grant is 5'11" and knocking at the door of 200 lbs. You need a mauler that can get a yard or two when everyone in the stadium knows the run is coming. I think Grant has the frame to add size and be a short yardage back. I know it's not glamorous but we need a guy that can punch a defense in the mouth on third and short.

Dixon will have to gain a good bit of good weight before playing. Probably close to 30 lbs.

I don't know Grant and wish him absolutely nothing but the best. He just doesn't look to be on par with the RB's Jones has been signing recently. Even Coleman came with the size and power but looked every bit as elusive as this kid.

Maybe a great S&C program will develop him. That's a point where you just have to hope that the coaches nailed their evals. But as a HS player... it is difficult to see him being the right kind of athlete based on that video.

Nothing against the kid but he doesn't appear to have very good speed. Several times during his video opposing players closed ground on him from behind.

He took it to the house several times in the video...That one play where he got caught at the 1 on the KR, that was during the 5a championship game against good comp. I don't think they recruited this kid for his top end speed but to say his speed isnt very good...lol...I have to wonder if you even got past the first two minutes of the highlight reel. If he were doing this in a lesser conference then maybe I'd agree with you, but he's not. His speed isnt elite like Dixon - but still good enough that he can be serviceable as PR/KR as well as a RB. IMO we got a good catch here, he's a very versatile ATH.

Watched over half of it and gave an opinion. He may develop into a great back. I'm not saying they haven't seen something in him to take a chance. All I'm saying is that in a league where you win with guys with the speed and ability of Dixon, Kelly, and Chandler... this kid doesn't seem to compare very well.

Just based on the guys we've seen go through, he kind of reminds me of Gerald Jones. A physical slot type guy. That would be valuable to the O.

U watched over half of it and made your opinion. Well, did u see him playing defense? I've said this several times on this thread that I think Grant is a pure football player, that can play S or LB. If he doesn't work out at RB, I believe he would make an excellent LB, kind of like the LBs, Chavis used to make out of RBs. Now, it may take a year in our S&C program before he's ready, but Grant is already playing defense in high school, so it won't be a hard adjustment, imo

This kid plays O/D, returns kicks, and has offers from several high level programs. Tom Smith was limited to a 2nd string RB for his highschool team. I get the concern, but this kid is a couple levels above Smith. He is versatile, and seems to be above average at every position he is placed in on the field. I think he is a solid add

Dude. Watch the tape. He's a breakaway back. We've had Hurd. Doesn't work in the sec. Gotta run where they ain't.

Since everybody is throwing their 2 cents in, I'll drop in mine as well.

I think Grant is a solid pickup. I've said before (and will again here) that I don't think he necessarily has any elite features to his skill set. But I think he's really well rounded and does everything pretty well.

He's got good vision, a decent frame to play around 210 lbs eventually (he's not far off now), and can catch well. I didn't really see him blocking in any of his highlights, so I can't speak to that really, but we have seen him play defense pretty well and he's obviously not afraid of contact, so he should probably do well enough blocking with some coaching.

He also should bring something the table for us on special teams. He's a good returner at the HS level. Idk if he'll unseat some of our other returners, but he'll be someone who will add to the competition there. He'll probably be able to contribute on coverage teams as well his first year or two before he gets a crack at being one of the top two backs.

I'm not sure he'll ever be a bellcow for us with the way we've recruited at RB recently, but I think he'll be able to be a solid contributor for us who might even surprise some folks if he does get that shot.

Yes. He looked really good. He plays like a LB but he'd be on the short side for that.

Again, I don't know much less hate the kid. He just doesn't look like he has a particular strength that would make him a good SEC RB or effective in Jones' system. He runs with good power in HS but would need to carry probably 30 more lbs to play that role in college... but that would make him an ill-fit for UT considering Hurd's struggles to fit Jones' O. He doesn't have the great speed that some do. He doesn't appear to have extraordinary vision, quickness, or cutting ability.

People do it all the time and I usually avoid it... but there is only so much you can tell from a highlight video other than the plays you are seeing are the ones the player and his supporters think paint him in the best light. So it would be impossible even if we were completely qualified to draw a full conclusion based on that video or half of it.

He could develop in a number of different ways. I just don't think that based on that video... he looks like someone who can help UT at RB. SB maybe. LB/S maybe.

PS- there is value in a guy being a "football player". But if they lack some athletic advantage a coach has to be able to use them in a niche role.

Yep. His retort when you call him on his "facts" is typically to call you ignorant or some other personal attack. He gets an A for time and effort but an F for content. He gets a much better reception in the FF where he has many more like minded posters.

IF you are referring to me then either show why I've been wrong to insinuate you were "ignorant" (as in unaware of pertinent facts) or show that you aren't.

I've been proven wrong many times in debates like these. I would rather be wrong... than continue to be wrong. So if you have a better argument than mine I have more cause to thank you than to react as you have here.

Wow. What a thoughtful, intelligent post. You have represented yourself well.

Again, I discuss football with someone else who apparently doesn't mind discussing football... and you girls want to discuss me.

Fair enough. Let's stay on topic with this recruit. First, he is not recruited as our speed back, but he is in actuality quite fast as you would see if you would watch the full video. Also, top end speed is not the determining factor of whether or not a back will be successful. I hate to bring up a UF back, but one of the greatest backs of all time ran around a 4.8 40. That would be Emitt Smith. My only issue with the way you post is that you never/rarely ever point out a positive aspect of anything. That is why I submit you feel the need to be contrarian in order to validate your thinking. Try a positive approach at least every once in a while. It's ok to be a bit of a Homer from time to time. I'm a Vol fan and even though we are not where we want to be yet, there's a whole bunch to be happy about.
