'18 TN DL Greg Emerson (UT commit 7/3/17)

It's my understanding the Hurd situation tore the team apart at the seams and Butch wasn't the leader that was necessary to repair the damage. After that season, Butch was done and ready to move on. Tifwiw.

Hurd situation started in December 2015 when he started demanding changes to the offense. We fired Lawson soon after and we were hanging by a thread at that point.

UT was just too big a spotlight for Butch. Think he is made for the Cincinnati’s or Western Michigan’s of the world. He couldn’t handle every single thing he did being scrutinized. Job was just too big.

Its my theory and i think the Bowles situation was a watershed moment that split the lockerrom and put a huge amount of pressure on CBJ and the team. It was his first problem and he couldnt handle it. Everything that went wrong stenmed from it.

All those issues were not issues till then. Maybe it was bad luck or karma. I don't know but it did him and the team in.

I agree and have posted it before. I think it was a leadership crisis for Butch and he lost confidence in his own decision making afterward. Amplified his own shortcomings and insecurities that he’d been able to overcome through hard work prior.

The Hurd situation happened because of how he handled the Bowles sitch. Like it was mentioned he had lost his edge his decision making and the team.

Am I being trolled or do you legit think Bowles was the catalyst of Jones' downfall? Man alive! Ive read some dumb sh!t on here so nothing *really* surprises me in the way of opinions, but damn newt. You lose big points here. Thats like calling a rat turd a caterpillar. Nah man, its a turd, its just youve convinced yourself its a caterpillar.

Nah dude. Botch made promises to Hurd to improve and maintain his already failing image. Botch is and will always be a failure. The sooner you realize he got to where he is by riding Brian Kellys coattail the better off youll be.

He was *never* a competent leader nor a good decision maker. Just a used car salesman with a low IQ. He was exposed at UT after he was forced to try and work with what he built. Everything about him screams con-artist, to the rumors of him wanting to jump ship to Purdue to his "it takes 6 years to rebuild a program". They were all the actions and the words of a weasel.

I get a bit alarmed when I see a commit's thread has zoomed up the page. I open the thread to see what's going on with Emerson, and all I find is Volunteer Kirby continuing taking shots at Butch. Move on, 2018 is here.

From the outside looking in it seems like there was a lot of hypocrisy with Butch. His favorites were coddled and could get away with misbehavior while he basically bullied other players, making their lives very uncomfortable. That's a great way to create division and animosity on a team, and I think that's exactly what we had the last couple of years.

Easy to sit there after the fire smolders and talk about how CBJ was just a sham of a coach. I did not say Bowles was the catalyst but how CBJ handled it was the beginning of his downfall. Like Invol said it lit the fuse. You can't say that we were not on the upswing before that. We had a plateau, then everything started becoming a crap show after.

Its my theory, if I lose points with you then oh well I doubt I had that many to begin with.

His failure to maximize talent started in year one. He lost players because they felt he was personally abusive or deceptive before that. His "scheme" and the "techniques" (that never worked well vs the SEC sans Dobbs) required to play it came before that.

The guy never should have been hired. He built a resume beating losers... and he had the good fortune to play a disproportionate number of them. He didn't start being an inadequate coach with the AJ thing. He already was. You might could argue that exposed him even more... but by no stretch did that cause his demise.
