Ahh, the old maybe the kid has no character defense. It gets played so often. Sad thing is, it's hardly ever true.
Missed this before.
You'll note that in my post I said 'perhaps', and what I said was offered in contrast to the myriad statements hitting him for being dramatic.
When I said "keeping the ATM open" I just meant that he might see a relationship between $100 handshakes and his apparent willingness to consider other schools. I hardly consider that any more indicative of his character than accepting a meal at a local eatery courtesy of the management or other patrons. If that's a problem, then lots of our soldiers and police officers lack character when somebody buys their meal to say thank you. And for the record, no, I don't think that's a character issue in the slightest.
Buying a meal for a Soldier or a Police Officer is entirely different than buying one for a high school kid that you want to influence favorably towards your school. That's not to say that every kid who accepts such thing has poor character either though. It's just not the same though. Saying thanks for a person all sacrifice and influencing college recruits are in very different ball parks.
Spoken like a soldier. I was a soldier. My sister is still a soldier. My son-in-law is a soldier, and my pregnant daughter is sitting alone in Germany while her husband is deployed for the second time in two years. I get it.
Counterpoint: Ask Inky how much of a sacrifice he made for our entertainment.
I understand your point. Don't be preachy.
I appreciate what the young men sacrifice to play football for our entertainment. Inky is an inspiration and an incredible human being. I am not saying that the young men don't deserve meals bought for them either. I'm just saying, playing a sport for our entertainment is very different from placing your life in harms way in foreign lands to defend the freedom of countless strangers you will never meet. Your family's sacrifice is incredible but do you think your daughter thinks her husband's absence is equal to him being off to play a football game. Come on man.
Of course not. Signing a NLI is nothing like the check that we signed. I just dislike the assertion that a kid enjoying the process is a character issue, and I wouldn't minimize the level of physical sacrifice...up to losing one's life...that these kids are looking at.
I have never said anything about these kids' character. Quite the opposite actually. I am usually on the side of the kids in most cases. We know less than half of what truly goes on in these recruitments and most of us have never nor will ever meet these kids to get a true sense of their character. The fact that they put in hours and hours of study and practice and physical discomfort is testament that most of them have a fairly good character. I think we are on the same side here. Maybe just slightly different points of view.
My original post was responding to the individual that translated my statement into a character attack. Which it wasn't, so that made me sad. Then you got self righteous on me. Which also made me sad. So stop making me sad. Mmmkay?
Btw, congrats on getting back to Tennessee! And as always, thank you for your service!
Perfect. I was thinking of a picture of Bald Biker, but the only place I could think of that was round and smooth enough to reflect his awesomeness was my butt cheek.
