Sugar Hill, Ga. (Lanier High School) quarterback Zach Calzada had high hopes of a Tennessee offer when he woke up Monday morning to throw on Rocky Top. That was kind of the plan all along to just get up there and throw, the 6-3, 190 pound Calzada said. I probably threw 30 minutes or so with coach Helton. Coach Pruitt watched the workout and he offered. They both said they liked my arm talent. I think I showed them good arm strength and velocity, but also a good touch and accuracy.
Monday was actually Calzada's third trip to see the Vols since February. For me, Tennessee was the Power 5 school to start showing interest back when I had 5-6 FCS offers. I went to their junior day back in early February. Coach Helton told me he liked my film then. I went and visited for a scrimmage in the spring. When things started picking up, coach Helton came and saw my spring game and he told me he wanted me to come up and throw I did today. So I have been in touch with them for a while.
With the whirlwind of the last few months, Calzada isn't interested in slowing down and catching his breath. He's instead working quickly towards a decision. I was talking to my coaches and for me, it all came at me really fast, Calzada admitted. But at the same time, I think it's time to bring the process to an end just as fast. Hopefully in the two weeks, it's going to be time to call up coach so and so and tell them I'm coming to spend the next four years with them.
Why the hurry? Simply put, Calzada wants to be in control of his decision. With quarterback's there's a domino effect. There are 3-4 quarterbacks in this situation looking at the same schools I'm looking at. So I want to be in control of the decision and not have things dictated by decisions other guys make. I would say I privately it's getting narrowed down. At this point, the schools that I'm interested in, the coaches at those schools know.
Obviously, football is very important for me so coaching, quarterback development, depth chart and is it a school I can have success at on the field is important. But also is it a school I would be ok with outside of football for four years. Would I be able to bond with people on campus outside of coaches and teammates that's also important.
