'19 GA QB Zach Calzada (In transfer portal)

I think most of us were more accepting of the coaches judgement at the time, I mean who in his right mind would not hire a real QB coach..the most important position on the field in the best conference in CFB?...Butch Jones that's who.

Agreed. One bad hire led to multiple bad hires.

I think we have the coaches in place who can easily evaluate Calzada and any other QBs or player to see if they are coachable. Because honestly that's all that matters is if the kid is coachable and if we have the right coaches to coach them.

I think we do now and am excited to see the product this fall and next year.

Which portion of me is dense sir? I have agreed that those coaches were not good and did not develop our QBs. Lol I don't know how much more agreeable I can be.

Look it really sounds like a Brubear..I mean I'm really starting to wonder if this is an alt? 🤔 Keep on talking bro, you argue just like him..

If I'm wrong about you, I apologize..But we already have one maddening contrarion who like to argue endlessly about obvious semantics...It really gets on most peoples people's nerves, so unless you wanna get ingnored by half the board you might want to rethink doing that.

clean up on aisle calzada...

Seriously though...what do you think about Calzada as a legit prospect? I dont know about this one, I mean Shrout had some legitimate reasons why he was still so raw on the field, this guy seems...just not that good, but we will see this season I guess..He may blossom, it happens.

Now see Sleegro, in with a very well written statement and analysis. Thank you sir for this post. I thought when we hired Canales he had just got off a 5 year stint of being an offensive coordinator and QB coach. (North Texas) I could be wrong.

If it'll make everyone happy I will concede to whatever. However, my point was that nothing I said was discreditable. Everything I said was factual and backed up by facts.

You can't have people mess with your credibility. However, people are entitled to their own opinions and that is what makes this message board great.

I was a little wrong. We hired Canales from Utah State where he was the RB and TE coach. He did coach QBs at times in his resume, but never was very successful at it from what I could tell. And he hadn't coached in the power 5 since 2006. I don't think anyone would call him a QB guru or anything close. We actually had Weinke trying to get the job and hired Canales instead. Just wanted to clarify that. Don't want to start an argument back up.

Edit: He is now OC/QB coach at UTEP.

HS Qbs are impossible to scout. There is so much between the ears, physical change, arm strength etc that hasn't happened yet or may not at all. A great QB coach is essential and I think we have one so any of these guys that have raw throwing skill have a shot to be great in our system.

Agree. Pretty crazy to look back at the top QBs in every class and see how they ended up.

Perfectly said.

Sorry Ulysees, to clear up all the bickering, my initial post was that I did not like the fact that Calzada stares his receivers down and does not transition through his receiver options. I stated it seemed he already had his mind made up on plays.

I think he obviously has the arm and release to be a good prospect.

Where this all went wrong is when someone said you can coach those things. Which I agreed on. But then I stated how JG had all of those attributes as well and has progressed slowly through his 3yrs. (Which yes I understand he had crappy coaches)

What no one has defended for JG is the fact that every summer he has worked with some great QB coaches to get better and is still progressing slowly. (Seems he did well in the Spring Game though, still a few indecisions and holding the ball too long though)

Anyways, if the coaches evaluate that this kid can be coached up and will progress from this coaching I would assume with his arm strength and quick release he could be a good pickup for us.

I don't think working with guys a few days during the summer is going to help anybody that much..it didn't do much for Dobbs. They need a real QB coach that has eyes and hands on the whole year. Great QB coaches like Cutcliff make meh players good, and good players great, and great players into legends.

I agree with this 100% as well.

Yeah it's why I prefer OC to be a QB guru. It just makes the most sense to have the guy calling plays to have his most important relationship be the QB so he knows strength and weaknesses to build around. Pretty excited to see what Helton does. I really liked some things I saw in spring game

It makes a huge difference and it seems like a no-brainer. All the great OC' s are QB gurus.

This article has done 2 things. It has, one, provided me zero information on Calzada for many pages, and two, it has made me hungry for a calzone.

This is the only way to coach an offense and was a major flaw in Butch from the get-go.
