He played well in the HS All Star games. I believe it was coaching related.
Ever wonder how Justin Coleman made it on the patriots roster? Cause he wasnt being coach by willie Martinez any longer.
Byrd was good as a freshman. Nobody was screaming bust then. Something got in his head last yr, he was in dog house and scott sucked at coaching offense. Byrd could easily get back to where he was projecting as WR. Safe to say it was a bust as DB but still potential as a WR.
Calloway and Johnson operated under the same misfortune and still managed to generate actual stats. Byrd didnt have a great freshman season by any stretch imo.
Just looking at other teams edits, ours are far and away better.
UT's design program is annually one of the better among state schools in the country. There are some schools that do really great, creative work, tho. OSU, Oklahoma, WASHU, Bama, UGA are a few. But UT definitely holds its own, and their new video director is a noticeable upgrade, too.
They still qualified as wide receivers. Calloway was a beast the first few games and Johnson picked up pace afterwards. Both had multiple GAMES with more than Byrds total of 3 catches.
Not really taking up for Byrd. Looks like he is perilously close to being an afterthought or worse. BUT, Im still gonna wait until he is either no longer with the team or the season plays out before I conclude that ANY of the players are failures.
I know some people disagree, but I really think our previous coaching staff had that big of a negative impact on the players. Some more than others for myriad reasons.
At this point, I really dont see how any Vol fan cannot agree that Butch and his staff had a HUGE negative impact on the players. I knid of feel sorry for guys like Byrd. He came to college expecting to be coached up and developed. He got neither. Sad.
