'20 VA C Dylan Cardwell

FWIW, this year's AAU circuit numbers for Hall and Cardwell...

Hall seems to fit the mold of what Barnes is looking for. Cardwell seems to fit the mold of what a traditional lineup would need at the 5 spot. Hall shooting 55% from 3 🤯 is probably why Barnes prefers him.

Barnes seemingly wants 5 guys on the floor that are interchangeable and can dribble, pass, shoot, and play and guard multiple positions. Just look at who he has recruited for proof. James, Johnson, Walker, Springer, and Hall are just the most recent examples.

I think Hall would struggle to guard smaller/quicker 4’s, so I’m not sure just how interchangeable he is.

There is zero doubt that Hall has the better and more polished offensive game, in an ideal world they are so different that you’d take both, but that’s not happening. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, and in reality whoever gets added probably decides the direction the staff looks heading into the spring.

You can look a this two ways. Would you rather have a offensive-minded stretch 4/5 big in Hall who may only be here 2 years max, or would you want a possible 4 year shot-swatting, rim-rattling, rebound-snatching big in Cardwell that you can develop? They are both nice options. I choose the latter.

I think we clearly disagree on his level of athleticism. I think he can guard most 4s and 5s. He likely won’t be able to guard everyone at the 4, but you find ways to scheme around that.

As you said, I don’t think we can go wrong with either. Good problem to have. I just think it is clear to see why Barnes probably prefers Hall. We may look back in 4 years and see things entirely different.

I think Hall is a 4 year guy

Don't think anyone has mentioned Hall with only being here 2 years max.

I doubt Hall is a candidate to go pro after two seasons. In fact, you might could argue that Cardwell is the better pro prospect based on his size and athleticism if he can develop a more rounded and polished offensive game. It may be him, who is perhaps a greater threat to leave early if he develops those areas of his game. He has a lot Bruno Fernando in his game, though a little more raw/limited at the same stage.

No one mentioned him being as a 2-year player. However, since the NBA loves big men that can step out and shoot the 3, I could see him testing the waters if he had a big year. That's why I used the word "may."

You have to wonder how effective Hall would be here. With the players we have offensively, we need someone to do the dirty work. Those stats make you wonder if Hall can suceed in the dirty work role.

I feel like we're talking in circles here, while also for some weird reason internally convincing ourselves that it would be a bad thing to have a Top-60 player commit to us. Hall is great. Whether you like his specific game or not is perfectly fine, but I don't think there is any reason to be acting like Hall wouldn't be a fantastic addition. Barnes and this staff also seem to be great at honing players defensively, so I see little reason to believe Hall can't come in and learn how to do the "dirty work."

If this kid is a better rebounder and defender give me this guy. Scoring isn’t going to be a problem going forward with all the talent we have in the 2-4 Position coming in

Landing both would be kind of cool because it would give you a bit of a Fab 5 sense in that all 5 could be on the floor at one time.

PG: Springer
SG: Johnson
SF: Walker
PF: Hall
C: Cardwell

Not that they would all start as freshmen like the original Fab 5, but it would be pretty neat to see them all together.

Agree, and I don’t think UT waits long for his commitment. Both could be potential early NBA guys, but with the scoring threats already committed(and more hopefully coming soon) I can see a scenario in Halls mind that he wouldn’t have to compete for minutes, based on defensive output, at another school.

If we’re right, I hope Barnes and Co. put a full court press on this guys recruitment, of Hall doesn’t commit during his visit or shortly after. Feels like he wants to be here, especially more than likely knowing Halls visit is right behind his and he still had the good guys in the final 4.

I feel as if Cardwell really wants to be a Vol and he’s just waiting on the green light.

Hall may still like UT but I think there’s other schools he’s more interested in.

I’d be happy with either one.
