2009-10 Offseason Discussion

We are a few days to a week away from the opening of Spring Training. Coming soon will be DIVISION THREADS. There will be six division threads. Each thread will give you the opportinity to interact with other fans within the division. I understand it may get ugly at times but that is the nature of the sport, especially the rivalry.

I like this a lot, excellent choice. Thank ya!
Some games will clearly overlap in threads, but i'll for sure be checking all of them. The AL East thread will be a backyard brawl.
Good way to filter through cool, unique things that happen each night, report lines and stats, etc.

Rip me all you want, the Nationals are pathetic, blah blah... :shaking2:
I've heard it. I'm just glad to see some good moves being made.

I think the Nats may actually have a shot at being around .500 this year, but are at least another year away from being much of a factor in the division. They definitely have a couple of good looking arms on the way.

I hear ya. Even my blind love for them is stopped by a heavy dose of being realistic.

I was lookin through random baseball preview magazines, and one picked them ahead of the Mets. I'd laugh until next april.

That may not be a completely crazy pick. The Mets just haven't done much to improve.

I don't know why the Mets ballpark is constructed the way it is, and I definitely don't know why Omar is fielding a team that belongs in Cincy, not Citifield. Jason Bay in that OF will be hilarious, as will their pitching staff behind Santana (if he's even healthy).

That being said, I don't think the Nationals will end up at .500. I don't know what their interleague schedule looks like, but the Phillies, Braves, and Marlins should all be better than them. So will every team out West except for the Padres. Improved- yes, .500- I don't think so.

I do like what they're doing though. Could potentially move Dunn at the deadline with Capps, Guzman, Willingham, etc.

The Nats actually played better ball under Riggleman the rest of the way after Acta was shown the door.

Completely agree. Bay could flop hard, and even a healthy Santana gives them.. 6 innings?

I wouldn't bet a lot on us being at or above .500, but if a few things click, possibly. The rest of the division is quite good and better than us. I thought for sure Dunn would be moved at the deadline, and still think it's a huge possibility.. but there are also reports of Dunn and Washington talking an extension? We won't be contending for the division, so we can make trades for the future.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT:

A recap of the Offseason wheelin and dealing will be now highlighted under the DIVISION THREADS. Expect Spring Training coverage to be cover under these threads, including player movements of unsigned players.

I'll add my random spring training insight while I'm down in Viera/Orlando!

Does anyone on here have a subscription to Baseball America? thinkin about gettin one.

If it was 2003 I might agree with you, but the 2010 version of I-Rod is a middle of the road catcher.

Even worse...from what I saw of him in NY.

The young pitchers will be impressive, especially Zimmermann and hopefully Strasburg. If you add him to Marquis and Lannan who will eat up and bunch of innings and maybe Wang? Suddenly that staff rivals the Marlins and the Braves in its best case scenario. Now, defense is a major issue.

I think Dunn will stay. He's really the only true power bat in the middle of the order there, and it's something Kasten really wanted when they signed him. Plus, he is great off the field there, in the clubhouse, with the fans, etc.

Jurrjens, Hanson, Hudson, Lowe, Kawakami. I may be a bit of a homer as a huge Braves fan, but the Nationals aren't stacking up to that rotation-wise.

Nah, we can't. Readily admit that. Shame that Zimmermann is out for the season but I hope he comes back strong. Scott Olsen is supposedly our number 3 as of now.
We do have a lot of young guys with potential still, Clippard, who has real real potential, Detwiler, Stammen.

Also, UTCLA, the eating up innings thing is huge. Because Capps could do a job, and Storen could sooner rather than later as well... Relief was a huge problem, so hey.. try to use less of it.

Who here believes in kawakami? Not knockin him, just getting opinions.

Yeah, not sure about that Taveras signing. We have him, Chris Duncan, Kevin Mench just kinda sitting there. I'd love to see Elijah Dukes lock downnn that position :( , and Justin Maxwell hit like he can with some opportunities.

I love Adam Dunn. Always have. But if someone is thinking quality prospects coming our way, I'm all for giving him up. Only thing is, I don't think we're getting like a major league ready top prospect type for him, not matter how much someone needs that bat.

The Nats need his bat just as much as anyone. Look at their offensive output in '08 and then '09. Tell me the difference.

Or Lowe for that matter. He was awful in the 2nd half.

Oh, I know. Trust me haha. Helped Zimmerman out immensely too, wasn't all just him being healthy... Lineup Protection was huge.

And yes, Lowe fizzled out in a big way. I thought they'd deal him, not vasquez.
