2009-10 Offseason Discussion

The Nationals and pitcher Chien-Ming Wang are very close to a deal. However, he may not be able to pitch till May. Other news: The A's released OF Wily Tavares and the Astros have interest. The Padres add a backup catcher: Yorvit Torrealba (sp). The O's are interested in pitcher Jerrod Washburn. The Indians are looking at Dye and Blalock, and picked up reliever Jamey Wright.

Yorvit Torrealba.

Dye and Blalock are each respectable options for most teams, depending on the role.

Not sure how i feel about chienming. I loved laughing at his 36.00 or so ERA last year for awhile, but the pinstripes made that easy.

The Giants picked up a long reliever and spot starter in Todd Wellemeyer.

Giants and Lincecum avoid arbitration. 2/$23 .. Doesn't cough up any free agent years, but I think he could have gotten more through arbitration. Guess the guaranteed 23 works though.

Random thought, but

The Tigers have a shot to have one of the best 1-2-3 in their pitching rotations in baseball, as do the d-backs.

The Nationals continue their surprising winter by picking up 2B Adam Kennedy. They are also eyeing pitcher Kris Benson, who scouts are claiming is at 100%

We are a few days to a week away from the opening of Spring Training. Coming soon will be DIVISION THREADS. There will be six division threads. Each thread will give you the opportinity to interact with other fans within the division. I understand it may get ugly at times but that is the nature of the sport, especially the rivalry.

What is so blockbuster about Adam Kennedy?

Nothing blockbuster about it. However he can play more than second base and can have a useful bat.

Funny, the only blockbuster signing we are waiting for is Johnny Damon.

I guess the "Nationals continue their surprising Winter . . ." thing kind of threw me off. I haven't really noticed much surprising about the Nationals the past few months.

I didn't expect them to go after a player like IROD and add Matt Capps and Brian Burney. DBake should add more to this.

If it was 2003 I might agree with you, but the 2010 version of I-Rod is a middle of the road catcher.

Robvols took the words out of my mouth with this one.

Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa (among a few other good prospects) are waiting 'on deck' for our middle infield, but going hard after hudson (he just... didn't want us) is more than we have done in a long time. And getting Kennedy, not just forgetting it. Getting marquis, going after Wang, signing a good closer. Not only are we filling holes, there is just more chatter and buzz in general about other possibilities. Capps will be dealt at the deadline or before, Guzman could go to a team who needs a good bat, same with Willingham.

Not gigantic, blockbuster moves like giving Holliday or Bay too much money, but smart baseball moves.

I don't mean to say we will contend this year, although we will be much improved... Especially if we get on a roll and some young pitchers find a rhythm. (longest win streak in baseball right now, I might add :) ) But we are becoming relevant again. A factor. With a rookie ace and rookie shut down closer on the way, and Jordan Zimmermann (max scherzer-ish IMO) back next year.

Rip me all you want, the Nationals are pathetic, blah blah... :shaking2:
I've heard it. I'm just glad to see some good moves being made.
