2009-10 Offseason Discussion

The Reds and the Rays are going after the services of SS Orlando Cabrera. Meanwhile, after taking a year off, OF Jim Edmonds decided to give it a go with the Brew Crew for a spot on the roster.
Reds win the rights to SS Orlando Cabrera.

The cubs decided to improve their AAA clubhouse morale by signing Kevin Millar

Actually, that signing is huge for the Cubs bench as he can play first base and the outfield. He is a great contributor.

We are a few weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting for the start of Spring Training and the top free agent left remaining is Johnny Damon. With the Yankees all but out of it after the signing or Randy Winn. Where do you think he will be playing for this season?

He got signed to a minor league deal, and Fuld, Hoffpauir, Colvin, Byrd/Nady are all in the outfield... Hoffpauir at 1B, Chad Tracy at 1B

I'm fine with the signing, I was just joking around about it.

Non-invitee?

I'm sure he'll be there. Millar himself said it was a minor league deal though

Jim Thome to Twins.

Mariners and Bedard talking

and, the one that makes me the most mad... Orlando Hudson to Minnesota.

The question is do they have the pitching.
???

The Reds main question marks going into this season is will Jay Bruce start to hit like everyone believed he would and will they get anything out of the LF, SS, C and if Rolen can stay healthy. They have plenty of pitching to make a run.

Even with Volquez (sp) out?

Either way, the Super Bowl always means it's just about time for Spring Training.

Is the pitching good enough to compete? Still at least a couple of years till Chapman comes up.

And who knows if Chapman can even play in the big leagues

The problem with the Reds is their hot and cold starting pitching. Their pitchers have one good game, then they have a bad one the next. They do have a good offense.

Volquez only pitched around 40 some innings last year. The Reds pitching was still very good even without him in the rotation.

They were 9th in the Majors last year in ERA with all kinds of injuries and youngins taking some lumps. Bailey and Cueto will be better than they were last year. Harang and Arroyo should be around league average again. The number 5 starter will be better than the production they got out of the spot last year.

The defense will be very good again.

The problem is the hitting.

They do have a good offense.
The Reds do not have a good offense. They were 24th in the Majors in runs scored last season.

These Reds are very different than the Reds of three years ago. Pitching is no longer the problem. It's the inability to score runs consistently.

It will not be a couple years. You don't pay someone 30 million dollars to sit in the majors this year. He will be called up in September even if he is only helping out from the pen. He will be penciled into the rotation in 2011.

I think Chapman has a good chance of making it up before then. To be 24th in scoring in that ballpark is definitely an issue. I like the Reds young pitching. If they mature quickly, they can make some noise in the central.
