Reactions To The Mat Latos Trade: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

•Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports likes the deal for both sides and argues that it takes a quality package of talent to land a 24-year-old potential No. 1 starter. When looking at all of the pitchers available on the trade market, including Gio Gonzalez, Matt Garza, Wade Davis, and Jair Jurrjens, Latos possesses the most upside.

•If the Reds make the playoffs in 2012 and/or in '13, in a weak division, and Latos helps, this trade will have served its purpose for the club, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

•Even though it's fair to say that Alonso and Grandal were blocked by Joey Votto and Devin Mesoraco, respectively, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (via Twitter) still feels that the Reds gave up a lot to land Latos.

•After watching Latos pitch in 2010, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer (via Twitter) could not have imagined the Padres dealing the talented pitcher. However, Latos' 2011 wasn't quite as impressive.

No one is saying they didn't give up some value. They gave up valuable players who weren't going to see the field to fill a desparate need. Given the available pitchers this was a win/win situation for both teams, and the Reds can still potentially go out and get another pitcher or LFer.

The people that think this was a fleecing are clueless as to the needs and rosters of both teams. Both squads got better, and the Reds had to give up a minor league reliever, a worthless starter and two good prospects who were likely to be blocked for the foreseeable future to get a top of the line starter. In what world is that a bad trade?

If Latos is 100% healthy and ready to go, I agree, good deal for the Reds.

I just don't think he is.

LOL. Every scouting report says he is not a good defender and at best would be an above average 1st basemen. He isn't a good fielder. Hell, that's part of the reason Cincinnati traded him in the first place.

Above average 1st baseman you say? Good thing he plays 1st base..

Except he won't in San Diego with Rizzo there. So there's that problem. Cincy put him in LF and it didn't work.

Rizzo wont break camp with the padres. He's going back to AAA. Alonso will be the 1st baseman. Rizzo is probably getting traded.

Link?

I can't believe they are going to trade Rizzo after acquiring 12 months ago as the main position player in the Gonzalez deal.

The people responsible for acquiring Rizzo are now employed by the Chicago Cubs.

Z I started a fantasy baseball thing over on TN, I know it's been a while but hopefully when the season starts back up we'll have some ppl

Also, Jim Bowden is one of the worst GMs in my lifetime, and that is why he is now employed by ESPN and not an MLB team. Any Reds or Nats fans will be happy to tell you the same.

Bowden is an idiot.

Latos was all but lights out for the last two months of last season. What makes you think he isn't healthy?

Because of the trade.

I'm just stating an opinion.

For a team that needs great pitching (and doesn't have a lot of depth), I don't understand why they trade Latos unless a) he's not healthy or b) he wanted out.

Classic jocketty trade...raid the farm for an established vet.

This is eerily similar to the mulder trade.

Anyway good trade for both sides though. Reds get cost-controlled front of the rotation pitching whose k/bb rate should translate well.

Sd gets a lot of upside on the offense, a good future reliever and a pitcher who should be helped by the abyss' in the nl west.

Sd will also likely be able to flip rizzo for more prospects. In fact I know a certain nl central ballclub who is currently looking for a 1b....

Well 3 in fact.
