Washpun is from my hometown.
I would caution y'all from expecting too much from this kid in his first few years in Knoxville. While Wes is obviously a high-caliber athlete, (as evidenced by his dunking ability) his overall game is very raw at this point. His shooting is particularly suspect, both from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe. He is a solid passer but sometimes his decision-making is poor. Also keep in mind that HS basketball in the state of Iowa is not elite by any means, so Wes's stats usually came against inferior competition (and the best player in the conference this year was Josh Oglesby, his backcourt mate, a 6'5 two guard headed to Iowa City).
Let me put it in perspective: most Iowa fans were not thrilled when Coach McCaffery extended the offer. Many felt that Wes was a fallback option. Obviously, TN basketball > Iowa hoops by a wide margin, even with the CBP fiasco and fallout.
That said, I believe Wes can be a solid contributor some day. His athletic ability cannot be taught, but more importantly, he is a fierce competitor. He will get better from day one. He will do whatever it takes to win. But he will have to improve his shooting drastically or else he will never see the floor, or at least not in end-of-game situations. Your ballhandlers must be able to knock down freethrows and hit big shots in March. We will see what happens though.
Go Vols.
