2012 SF Derek Reese - New TN Commit

This kid is a role player. Role players are necessities. But so is a stud or two. The comments on this kid are just frustration on being kicked to the curb by Poythress and immediately finding out about 2 3* role players we're interested in.

Numbers like his make me wonder if he played behind or with a couple of upper classmen that were players and taking most of the shots. He'll probably be a 18/10 player his Sr year. That's a good line of so.

I haven't learned anything about basketball. All I know is that I like to have fun and fun to me on this site is reading some of the nonsense and making sense of it. I don't plan on a career in coaching, handling or anything to do professionally with basketball. You're getting upset when i am agreeing with you. I haven't for once said I didn't want certain players. All I said is that I am being honest about stargazing. I like to see a bunch of stars. BUt, you know and I know it is a crap shoot and a gamble on any 17 year-old. I just like to follow it is all. IF you don't that your business. Me? I like to look at a list of commits and then to the right the number of stars. IF that makes me less of an athlete then so be it. I would, however, be willing to bet that I can run a 40-yard dash faster than any other 47-year-old on this site or anywhere. Just because I didpn't play HS or college ball doesn't mean I can't play sports. I can also play basketball better than most at my age. The only reason I bring this up is that I don't care about yours or anybody else's credentials on this site. IF i wanted creditentials then i would consult Jimmy Hyams or Dave Hooker. But I do not. So leave it at that.

So act like a man and don't call someone a liar when you have been proven to be wrong. You don't care about credentials, and we could give a **** how fast you can run.

Try Cortez Barnes, Greg Bell, Orlando Berry, Rodney Bonds, Chris Brand, Jermaine Brown, Stanley Calwell, Michael Curry, Lamarcus Golden, Ed Gray, Carlos Groves,Steve Hammer, Allan Houston, Ian Lockart, Steve Rivers, Shun Sheffied, Kevin Whitted, and Lang Wiseman and see how they were rated as recruits. I'd be glad to have that level of recruits now.

I love how everyone on this site preaches patience with Dooley (who has taken several commitments from players with lackluster offer lists) but is ready to run Martin out of town over taking ONE guy like that.

The bulk of our basketball fan base is completely delusional.

It's sad, but it is kind of embarrassing how few people in Thompson-Boling over the last few years actually understood the rules and complexities of basketball.

I'm going to assume that the fans who have never played an organized game in their life will not be coming to the games for the next couple of years. I hope I'm wrong.

Barnes--juco, played 1 yr
Bell--ball player, but not Wade's recruit
Berry--juco, 1 yr, avgd 3 pts
Bonds--1 yr, 1 pt avg
Brand--3.5 career
Brown--3.4 career
Caldwell--3.8 career
Curry--2.3 career
Golden, Gray and Groves--decent, really good and good
Hamer--good
Lockhart--not Wade's recruit
Rivers--terrible
Whitted--not bad

So Wade may have recruited 5-6 good players in his tenure. I know you said he couldn't coach, and he couldn't, but players with talent like Gray and Groves shine no matter what.

Chris Lofton was a 3 star, but I seem to recall him being a pretty good player. Dane Bradshaw was a 3 star, but he did everything asked of him in an unselfish manner. Kid played with heart. And I'm not sure what JaJuan Smith was rated, but he started his UT career as a walk-on. Kid was a hell of a player and he was a walk-on. But all those guys must really suck because they weren't 4 stars or 5 stars. I mean, a recruiting site or even opposing coaches can't possibly miss on a kid, right? Why should we trust our coaches to do what they're paid to do? If he doesn't sign those 4 star or 5 star kids, or at least kids with offers from bigger schools, then he doesn't belong here. We shouldn't even give him a chance. To hell with him. We should have just hired some UT flunkie and road it out for three years. Then old Brucie can ride in and save the day. Everybody wants a coach that was suspended from coaching for three years because he was dumb. I'm sure parents are lining up now to make sure he can coach their kids. The man's a paragon of virtue, despite dragging UT's image through the mud because he couldn't man up and tell a simple truth. It was all a conspiracy by the NCAA and ESPN to bring us down. Freakin' bastiches.

Pearl's first class- Duke Crews(kicked off the team), Ramar Smith(kicked off the team), Marques ? (was it Johnson?, Transferred), Josh Tabb(kicked off the team), and Wayne Chism( the only one of 5 players worth a damn). But it was a great class right? Despite the fact that 80% of it did jack squat for our program.

I am more interest in the Jarnell Stokes recruitment.

If he can get Stokes, my concern about Martin's recruiting (which isn't that high to begin) will dwindle.

Even if he isn't that good, we at least have someone who can shoot FT's. No more Scotty Hopson, Cam Tatum, and Melvin Goins on the line with the game on the line.

Goins hit some big ones. Missed a few too, but always gave his best. If cams heels weren't stuck to the floor he'd be ok. Can't believe he hasn't fixed that yet.

But couldn't someone ask you why you preach patience with Martin when you're ready to run Dooley out of town? What's the difference?

Did Reese announce his commitment on ESPNU?

It would have made for some great TV drama if he picked up both a UT and a Rider hat, and put the orange one on his head. (I'm assuming Rider's colors don't include orange, also).

The year before UT hired Martin, Missouri State won the MVC regular season title. The year before UT hired Dooley, Louisiana Tech went 4-8 and lost to Utah State and Idaho.

We were informed last week that we weren't going to be on probation, have a postseason ban, or lose schollies. This, after being drug through the mud the entire year last year.
You guys expect top 100 players to jump right in? That's not how it works.

I agree with you on the star system, but I have a hard time believing not one decent team (not bad sec team) would not have offered if he is good. I hope he proves me wrong though. GBO!

For the most part, I think a lot of the (im)posters at this site just want to get a little attention. I agree with pretty much everything you have said in this thread. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with fans that don't post that much on this site because of the continuous pissing match between the members. I also wanted to send out a Big Orange Welcome to our new recruit, Mr Reese.

I haven't seen CJ Watsons name mentioned in this thread he too was a 3 star.

For the stargazers I have two schools for you - Butler and VCU.

Good point. Because the only proof that stargazers can rebuttal with is Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Ohio St., Florida, Texas, etc.......

The aau tournaments and workouts are for the NBA game and there is zero structured D. Top aau players all plan on the NBA. Many of those kids have games that don't translate to a structured, college game. You also see kids that dominate the college game at times but can't make a pro squad. The stars are based off the NBA game, not college. The challenge is finding the right mix.

Very good points. Also, This young man that this thread is about, if he can grab 7 boards a game, play some stiff D. Hit 85% FT and be versatile enough to step back and nail 3's at 6'8". That is going to appose a big match up problem for a lot of teams.

I am glad we got in on him before some of the other SEC schools or maybe other big names offered.

That's another thing that some don't consider, He could have been on other (bigger) school's radar that hadn't been reported to the services, or they were holding off offering. All for nault once he signs.

I am one Vol fan that will do my job, do the thing that I can control. That's to support my team and our coaches.

I am a fan of the Tennessee Vols, and DAMN PROUD OF IT!!!!

GO VOLS!!!!

Why are you guys throwing VCU and BUTLER around? We are not talking about the success on the court because we can't compare it just yet. We are talking about RECRUITING and the types of PLAYERS we SHOULD BE GETTING. Back in the day, those schools had to rely on who they could get and be fine with it.
My biggest fear is that CCM doesn't realize that he can go after more elite players. I'm hopeful that he has an AMAZING EYE for talent. Tennessee may not be a GREAT BBALL team and there are some uncertainties, but we do play in a league where there are LOTS of ELITE players. Now, I'll be honest, I have NO idea if any player will be great. I don't really go by stars either, but I do go by if my competition around me is seeking them. It's like if I owned a record label and I really wanted to sign a band. If I LOVE THEM, then NO MATTER what I'll sign them and screw it if no one likes them...Now, if I just like the band and I'm not sure about it, I'll throw out feelers to people and also KEEP TABS on the other label execs if they start to show interest. Then, BOOM! Hopefully I'll snag them before it's too late.
