2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

Dominating? His high school competition is terrible, just private schools and prep schools around West TN. Dominating AAU, seriously?

Based on the talent that comes out of West Tenn every year, I would have thought high school competition out that way would be pretty good.

Had no idea Stokes was a specialist at evaluating talent.

Nah. Basketball players that play at a high level with other players don't know if kids can play or not.

wtf man. You a pissed off MUS punk or something? At least post with some knowledge of some sort.

He's friends with Stokes, so why wouldn't Stokes want Austin to play for UT?

West TN has great Bball talent, but not in the private and prep schools.

Let me explain how ball in w tn works. Briarcrest plays in their league, and also plays city schools. Austin plays the top level of AAU and travels the country for tourneys. Additionally, he plays pickup games all over the city with current and former college players that are still around and have games at various gyms. Sexton also brings clients in town from time to time and they run as well. I played with Horace and Harvey Grant, Scottie Pippen, and many others at those games years ago. (Even Woody Harrelson played while filming Larry Flynt in Memphis)

Basketball there is more than just playing 10 games against MUS, CBHS, st george's and st benedict, among others.

Yes all kids in West TN are home schooled.

I noticed you didn't answer the real question. If there is great talent in west Tenn, how are they not in the prep or private schools? Where else would they be playing?

Edit: I think I understand you now. When you say Prep School, I immediately think all high schools. I think I understand what your saying now.

Because he's a good kid, can ball, and is friends with Stokes because they have played together. He sees the court like Stokes does and knows the game. Ballers like to play ball with others that know the game.

Stokes played with him last year. What better way to evaluate how a person plays.

Kids are the worst at giving accurate evaluations. They are very biased and their judgement is very often clouded by friendship. We all love Stokes but he can't be expected to be a true talent evaluator.

That's not really accurate. Ball players know who can play, and who can't.

So a teenager that is a great ball player is exempt from having biased lapses of judgement?

Come on. Kids are kids! How talented they are doesn't mean their minds aren't clouded with bias just like any other human being.

Everybody has a bias. Every coach looks at a kid and makes quick assumptions. You said kids are the worst at evaluating talent. That's not true, especially at the level of Stokes and Nichols. They know who can play and they know who is all show and all talk because they have been in heated games with them and against them. That doesn't mean that Stokes isn't biased because they are friends. That's natural. But you are fooling yourself if you don't think some of the players know who can and can't play better than the Rivals guys putting a star on them based off of hype gained during the summer tournaments and clinics.
By Woolridge's NBA tryout tape, he looks like a stud. Rivals would probably rate him a 4 star, which they did. Kids that play with him know, and knew, better.

A player like Stokes could make a very good evaluation of a teammates talent but it should be taken with a grain of salt because of bias. I would except coaches and scouts thoughts much more so than a players opinion. So when considering Nichols I would look much more at the fact that big schools are recruiting him than I would at what a former teammate says about his talent. So my point is that players are the worst evaluators when considering a group of players, coaches, and scouts.

Scouts miss out or misevaluate a ton of players. Just saying.

I get your point about age, maturity, experience, etc, but I guarantee you CM has talked to Stokes about Nichols' game. They all ask players about other players.

No doubt CM has talked to Stokes but IMO that conversation was more about his mental make up and character than talent evaluation.

Well, the fight info came from a person with connections to the UT basketball program, so I'll take it on it's face.

I'm no doctor, so I don't know what a fractured jaw means. As someone who has had a broken nose before, it clears up pretty quickly though. I'll reiterate, I don't have a dog in this fight, I was simply passing on information that may be of interest to UT fans.

As for discussing Nichols with you, I don't ever remember having a discussion with you about him. His leaders are and have been Duke and UF, but with UNC, UK and Louisville getting in the mix, that may have shifted.

Bump.
