An insider on VQ said today that we lead for Austin.

It's a video or I'd link it but...

High high high praise for Tennessee as a team and staff...

- very impressed with CCM and the job hes done
- says hes good friends with jarnell and would like to follow him here if it's possible
- says he'd like to sign in the early signing period which would be huge for us
- really praised the fans and talked about the support they showed for the team
- wants to take his OV's this fall then committ
- says every sec school is recruiting him as well as Memphis and butler
- no mention of duke, UNC, or Vanderbilt though specifically

Tennessee is definitely in his top 3 choices right now. I have heard it out of his own mouth @ the gym. He always sports the Power T cut off short when he is in there.

I have seen him in the gym with his trainer a few times since last fall, and like I said before..... He likes sporting his Power "T" shirt. Just saying

Thank you hope we can land him. Would be another highly rated player out of memphis that CCM would land. Go get em CCM.

Add hubbs and Crawford and that'd be 4 in 3 years. Not too shabby for someone whos critics biggest question is his recruiting.

Markel Crawford? I'm not sure I'd call him "highly rated". The rest, sure.

Are the words "highly rated" in my post?

Point still remains...add hubbs & Nichols that's 3 HIGHLY rated guys in 3 years that Memphis wanted and CCM would've got.

Add in Crawford and that's just another talented Memphis kids with ties to the Memphis area.

That's what you responded to by saying "4 in 3 years".

Your pre-occupation with the U of M aside, if CCM snags Nichols and Hubbs then he's doing very good work. He's got his work cut out for him.

As for Crawford, if you guys get him I'm sure you'll laud your recruiting victory over Auburn and Kent State from the highest mountaintops.

Well to be fair, your post was in response to a post that did contain the words "highly rated" prospects. I had the same thought as MC when I first read your post, but I just dismissed it. Crawford seems to be picking up steam and this summer could be a real turning point in his recruitment if he shows marked improvement. He could see his offers and ranking increase before his senior season.

Yes I responded to that post, I didn't make that post therefore I didn't say he was highly rated. By saying 4 in 4 years I was more referring to players from Memphis than highly rated players from memphis.

He's a 3* combo guard from Memphis who really likes Tennessee, I'm all for signing him. Even if he's a role player, he's one more person that provides that Memphis connection.

I didn't feel the need to correct the poster over whether he's a 4* or a 3*...I guess next time I should.

He's ranked very close to jajaun Johnson who Memphis is drooling over, so for people to point to his rankings doesn't make too much sense.

As you said, he seems to be picking up steam and a good showing in AAU this year and hell probably pick up a few more offers from bigger schools.

As I've been saying, I'll gladly take him. Hes better than some of the guys on the roster IMO, and provides that Memphis connection.

By the way has offers from Auburn, Florida, Tennessee & Vanderbilt.

Here's a recent write up:

Top 10 prospects closing in on R150

4. Markel Crawford
School: Memphis (Tenn.) Melrose
The Buzz: The 6-foot-5 wing has been outstanding during his junior year. He's always been an electric athlete, but Crawford has rounded out his overall game and is shooting the ball with confidence.

9. Jajuan Johnson
School: Memphis (Tenn.) Southwind
The Buzz: One of the South's most improved players, the 6-foot-4 Johnson has really rounded out his game. Primarily a spot-up shooter on the post, Johnson has become a dangerous driver and big-time finisher in transition because of his athleticism.

I wouldn't call Jajuan Johnson "highly rated" either.

Interesting how the recruiting in the state of Tennessee is starting to evolve. UT beginning (at least it appears so) to make inroads into the city of Memphis for the first time in years, the U of M all but abanadoning in-city recruiting for a more national approach.

Do you feel Memphis is "abandoning" the city and going national because they want to it because they're realizing they're no longer keeping every guy home like they used to?

I think U of M has realized if we just try to recruit Memphis it appears we're missing in some and will end of SOL. So they're now broadening their recruiting horizon IMO.

Regardless of his ranking, what he would bring to Tennessee is much needed shot-making ability from the perimeter. If he can improve his all-around game, he can be a contributor.

Not comparing the two in terms of future projections, but Chris Lofton had a similar scouting report coming out of Mason County as Crawford. I would much rather have a guy that can shoot at a high level and teach him to make athletic moves than vice-versa. We have tried and failed miserably recruiting the uber-athletic guys and trying to coach them into basketball players.

Spot on assessment.

And the fact he wants to be here, and is a Memphis kid to me is just icing on the cake. As I also pointed out, he's about to crack rivals top 150, and now holds offers from auburn, Florida & Vanderbilt.

This is not a kid you turn away.

We could never keep every guy home in Memphis. Memphis will always have a deep recruiting pool, and Pastner used this to his advantage as a new coach. However, Cal was notorious for letting highly ranked kids from Memphis go elsewhere, and I think Pastner is starting to see why.

In city kids come with baggage, and that's trouble for a hometown coach. I'm sure UT fans heard a bit about Joe Jackson over the season. He wasn't performing, was benched and then his AAU coach started rumors that he was going to transfer. If Joe was at UT, or Georgetown, and was underperforming, he'd simply ride the bench in peace until he snapped out of it. But in Memphis, he's got so many people in his ear. More than most coaches care to deal with.

So Pastner has started to eschew in-city recruiting, which he held up as one of his priorities only a few years ago, in favor of getting TX, GA and Northeasterly kids.

I expect he'll pursue the occasional in-city kid like Nick King, but others, like JW3 and Leron Black, Pastner has simply givin up on. Hell, our recruiting class this season is 2 kids from GA and a JuCo from Kansas.

This will obviously work to UT's benefit.
