2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

Who said anything about pay for play?

If you spend all summer when you're 16 and 17 playing for a coach every day and traveling around the country, that coach will have an influence with some players. Especially when that adult is well-connected and well-funded.

And the fact that Austin put Auburn on his list once Ryan Miller took a job there proves that his AAU coach does have some level of influence over the process.

This is the way recruiting works. It's very rarely simple.

The Nichols family and Austin are smart enough to not allow his decision to be affected by the bs you speak about. They won't be manipulated that way. If a kid has no home structure and the aau coach is basically his dad, your point is valid. In this instance, you're off.

And no pointers on recruiting needed. Thanks anyway.

So how did Auburn suddenly jump onto his list two weeks ago when it wasn't before?

Uh, that's not what I suggested.

I suggested that Austin's AAU coach has deep connections to Virginia and Auburn. What a shocker - they're both on Austin's list. You trying to say an AAU coach who spends hundreds of hours around kids all summer and drags them all over the country has no influence over their recruitment? That's naive.

Hey genius Florida and Mizzou have just as much of a connection to that program as UA and UVA.

You know how you said Kings visit to Tennessee was a courteous visit?

Listen to yourself.

This is a prime example of courteous. The guy he had a relationship with, and who is tied to his AAU team switches schools. It's a courtesy to M33M an Miller to atleast acknowledge auburn.

It's the way recruiting works, need some more lessons?

Except I didn't say that.

It's exactly what you said.

This isn't you saying it was a visit out of courtesy...

This was in reply to asking why King visited UT...

How should I know? Why do any kids make visits? People develop relationships in recruiting, and if someone has worked really hard to recruit you it would be DISCOURTEOUS not to at least come on campus and give them a fair chance.

Why would anyone go to memphis over UT? Now that theyre in the big east theyll be a bottom feeder, and its basically a commuter school with nothing going on.

Uncalled for IMO. Our Memphis posters are no problem.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Been on the board a week waiting to get validation email; read top 30 to 40 topic threads. Learned more about UT/Memphis recruiting in 7 days from your congregation than previous 7 months everywhere else.

I will try to stick to facts and ask questions with posts. Here for insight into college BB recruiting and just keeping up with Jarnell's progress.

Keep that attitude and you'll be the most liked Memphis fan on this board.

Glad to have ya, welcome.

Welcome to the boards! Rival fans are treated decent as long as they aren't into bashing. It's a GREAT board!

And as long as they don't feel led to "educate" our unintelligible fanbase on the finer points of basketball and recruiting. We are not all ignorant boobs who stumbled in here from the football forum by accident.

Bless you my fellow round ball friend! Took the words right out of my mouth!

I understand football is king in the south but I don't understand how so many find it odd when one perfers basketball over football. I love football, don't get me wrong but I find basketball 10 times more exciting!

I'm with you on that! I grew up playing bball and played through college. Love it!

Simple Answer...

Just like kids that grow up in Knoxville wanting to play for UT, the kids in Memphis grow up wanting to play for the Tigers and be adored by the city in front of their family and friends.

What about Jw3?

"You can't win them all," i still believes he heads out of state.

The Tigers need a collaboration of size and a post presence, which JW3 offers neither. He want's to play SF which is fine, but Memphis needs another PF and C.
