2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

Nichols strikes me as somewhat of a poor man's Tyler Hansbrough, minus the strength. Both run the floor well, have good back to the basket games and post moves, and can shoot.

Hansbrough was a better rebounder and defender at the same stage, but likely due to Nichols' lack of upper body strength. If he adds the strength, combined with his intelligence and skill level, he could dominate.

I see him more as a Tyler Zeller guy. Not overly athletic, runs the floor well and is fundamentally sound. Just never saw him with the Hansbrough motor, demeanor or tenacity. Austin seems more laid back, smooth and won't dominate with his strength or body a la Tyler Zeller.

I'd like a Cody comparison much better hahaha

Tyler Zeller is 7 feet tall, so I didn't feel comfortable using him as an example, though they have similar demeanor and skill sets. I wasn't really comparing Nichols to Hansbrough in terms of demeanor. I was comparing their physical attributes and game types.

Yeah, me too. Cody is going to be dominate this season. Kid's got the full package.

Yeah, I kinda figured the height comparison wasn't the greatest. I was looking more at the skill set too. I remember Bruce was recruiting Zeller early on before he blew up and I loved the way he played. Just a lanky kid that could run up and down the floor and was fundamentally sound. In the same mold, Nichols won't wow anyone with his athleticism and you won't walk away from the game thinking that he does anything "great." He does everything good. The kid has a high basketball IQ that does all the little things that make a team better. That and he has a nice upside. That, IMO, is why he is so coveted. Also, I can see the poor man's Hansbrough comparison as well.

I really want to see the title to this thread "2013 F Austin Nichols (Tennessee Commit)"

Just seen RH3 say he can't come back to visit on the 20th with Austin because its against the rules. Did anybody else know about this?

Just saw that too.. but at the end Nichols said "We fin to turn up" which sounds good for us.

I'm hoping Laetner rather than Hansbrough.

How is this against the rules? You can take an unofficial whenever you want as long as its not a dead period or whatever can't you?

If Nichols can take an OV I see no reason why Hubbs couldn't take a UV.

That may have been what he was referring to. Either way from the sound of the conversation UT is Austin's landing spot for sure now.

"On the hoops front Tennessee is in a holding pattern now with all the focus centering on the weekend of Oct. 20 when five-star prospect Austin Nichols, the No. 17 player in the nation will be in town.

This weekend Nichols is making an official visit to Duke. Next weekend he has a trip set up to Auburn. Obviously, the Duke visit is probably of a little more concern to the Tennessee staff. The Blue Devils have been in on Nichols in a serious way since early in the process and he's long expressed interest in that program.

He's already been to Vanderbilt and Virginia, and as we've been indicating on the message board for the last week or so, we're starting to like Tennessee's chances more and more here. It feels from this perspective that the Vols have maneuvered themselves into the driver's seat in the last month or so.

Now, it's not wise to assume anything in recruiting when going head-to-head with Duke, but we're hearing more and more buzz that suggests Nichols plans to make an announcement pretty quickly after he visits Knoxville. If he sticks to that plan, look for Tennessee to get good news.

The timing of his Auburn visit sort of hints at that as well. Previously, if Nichols was going to visit Auburn it looked like it would happen the first weekend of November. By rescheduling things so that he's going next weekend, he'll be finished with all of his trips by the time he returns to Knoxville.

We're not saying this one's over yet, but it feels like Tennessee is putting itself in prime position to land a second five-star prospect in this class.

This was the first week all fall that Cuonzo Martin wasn't on the road, as the head coach stayed in the office to get ready for the upcoming SEC coaches' meetings and the start of practice. Martin has visited with Nichols every week this fall though, a chore that assistant coach Jon Harris assumed this week. Expect Martin to be back on his regularly scheduled visit routine with Nichols next week."
