2013 JUCO PG Jordan Johnson

I wish Cuonzo would have went after 1st team Juco All-America Dre Mathieu. I think this new Juco prospect is a much better shooter but with Robert Hubbs and Darius Tompson coming in with Jordan, we should be good shooting. Tennessee needs somebody to break a press, set up the offense and drive and dish. The biggest need that nobody on this team can do is on defense stopping the smaller quicker point guards from taking them off the dribble and getting in the lane. Darius is smart, can shoot and is long and pretty athletic. He is not quick going lateral. Maybe this guy can do it.

Jordan Johnson was a first team all American

I spoke with the guy who runs jucojunction.com earlier tonight, they're run by rivals...he said grades are a concern with guys like this. Sounds as though grades scared many off, but recent news may be that he's going to make it.

So what's next? As rumblings on the board Thursday afternoon suggest, junior college point guard Jordan Johnson from East Georgia College is a name that we've heard mentioned this week and someone we believe the Vols are about to get serious about.

Assuming that Barton picks someone besides Tennessee, look for Johnson show up on campus as an official visitor the first weekend of June.

At only 5-foot-10, he's not got ideal size, but was a prolific scorer in junior college, making over 100 three-pointers a year ago.

Johnson also has a deep tie to the Tennessee program through Jordan McRae. He's from McRae's hometown and the two have some history together.

Johnson is lightly recruited, as his being available in the summer would suggest, but he did have a firm offer from Ole Miss.

Elsewhere on the recruiting front Tennessee is trying to get involved with another transfer, but this one won't have any bearing on the 2013-14 season. Stephen Hurt, a 6-10 post player was granted a release from David Lipscomb this week and will be transferring out.

Tennessee and a host of SEC programs have moved quickly to try and get involved here, and with Hurt originally hailing from Murfreesboro, the Vols do have the in-state tie working for them. He attended Siegel high school, where he was lightly recruited and graduated in 2011. He sat out his first year and Lipscomb and has added roughly 50 pounds to his frame in the last two years.

The downside is that since he sat out a year already, he seems to have no interest in picking a four year school at this point and immediately sitting out another season. As a result, he'll likely attend junior college for one year and resurface at a high major next fall with two years of eligibility remaining.

The Vols' needs in the post in 2015 are tremendous, and Hurt is an early and prominent name to add to the board and keep in mind going forward.

If Barton goes to A&M I will never question VQ again. It sure looks like this is just another example of us wanting them to be wrong followed by criticism about their lack of knowledge. Time and time again they come out of situations like this smelling like roses.

Hmm... I don't see Jordan Johnson playing the PG position that much. I honestly feel like he's our Chris Lofton. Would rather shoot the 3's than anything. How much PG time has he had.

Also, if we take him, he'll play 2 years right? Barton would probably play 1?

I don't share your affinity for VQ. Barton to A&M is not some monumental piece of news. If Barton was a 5 star, sure lottery pick, Vol legacy recruit, and had been committed to UT for a long time, and then signed with A&M out of nowhere, shocking everyone, but VQ was calling it the whole time, that's impressive. This is not.

It will be impressive because there's been almost no news from the Tennessee side. All the news has come from other places and it all points to Maryland or Tennessee. Hubbs and crew have had almost nothing on the situation, then mention Texas A&M in passing on a radio segment as if it's no big deal.

I will continue to hold the opinion that with our current roster we do not need a break-you-down off the dribble PG. We have two strong post players that will demand double teams when they are 15 feet from the basket. We need strech-guards (term is usually used with a 4 man but it works in this context). We need guards that will make teams pay when the double down on Stokes and Maymon. A knockdown 3-point shooting PG on the court at the same time as McRae would be great.

When Golden was not in the game, teams pressed. It was difficult for us to even get the ball inbounds, much less bring the ball up the court. We currently have no guards that have the ability to feed the post. McRae, Richardson, McBee, Golden all sucked last year at it. All we need is a pg that can bring the ball up the court, can pass the ball effectively, and play decent D.

I have seen Robert Hubbs and Darius Thompson play. They can shoot the 3 really well. You need a point guard that can drive and kick out to those guys and Jordan. Darius is really more of a combo guard that can play well and shoot well off the catch. So a quick driving point guard would be perfect for this group of guys. Double those post and give up the lay up to the quick point guard or come over to stop him and he can dump it off to Stokes for the dunk.

I think that's a different dude.

The Jordan Johnson that we are recruiting plays at East Georgia.
Slap my fanny and call me a dumb ass.
How'd I miss that?
Pic looks just like him though.
