2013 TN PG Darius Thompson

We took Moore with no open spots didn't we? I don't recall the exact timing.

I think we looked into this before. IIRC, they took Moore's commitment after it was released that Washpun was leaving. They were within a few days of each other so it seemed kind of obvious they knew Washpun was leaving and Moore was just waiting for that to commit. I don't think you can take commits from guys any more unless you 'officially know' it's going to be available.

The point is the same though. Room was made for Moore (Washpun leaving). If Thompson is going to be a scholarship athlete at UT next season, room will have to be made for him too.

Better chance to transfer Edwards or Reese?

I'm not sure what you copy/pasting a roster is supposed to tell me.

There are 3 guys leaving the program at seasons end that are on scholarship. McBee,Miller, and Hall. There are 3 guys signed in this class, Landry, Davis, and Hubbs. Tennessee currently has 13 (the max) players on scholarship.

13-3+3= NO ROOM.

Someone would have to leave early (transfer or go pro) or not come despite having already signed a LOI.

Correct me if I am wrong but Miller is on the team and he is a senior this yr. So that makes 4 open slots avaliable

Quote myself to do a little edit. They took Moore's commitment on 3-20-12, announced Washpun leaving on 3-26-12 and Moore signed his LOI on 4-11-12.

I think he signed his LOI on national signing day. There is no prohibition about taking more verbal commits than you have schollies to give out.

Perhaps that's what they talked about? How Martin would love to have him, but he wouldn't actively pursue him unless he showed a genuine interest in Tennessee by opening his recruitment up.

Just a thought...and he could just be flat out lying.

I'd buy that if it was one conversation, but they talked pretty frequently. Martin was even trying to get Thompson to UOV for UK game from my understanding...(Thompson may have made it in quietly).

Martin did this with someone else, the name is really slipping my mind though.

It shows Moore committed on 3/20/12, which happens to be the day after we lost to MTSU. I am guessing that they had already spoken to Washpun and knew that he was leaving. Thus, they took Moore's commitment as soon as possible.

That's how I remembered it as well, just wasn't positive. So he may very well take a commitment from Thompson now, even though we technically don't have an open spot.

I've never heard this. How does UK get away with it then, because I'm sure they don't "officially know" who's leaving.

As you said though, if Martin wants Thompson they'll take his commitment and make room at the end of the year...and Martin WANTS Thompson bad.

What are your thoughts on him as a player?

There you go. Football coaches have been known to take more, knowing that they would lose guys in the offseason. It is the old "take him and the numbers will work out later."

As I stated above, Moore verbally committed the day after we lost in the NIT to MTSU. I am sure the staff already knew that Washpun was leaving, so they told Moore he could come.

They can't do that in football anymore. No more over-signing. I am not sure if they can do it in basketball or not. To be honest, my confusion was because I was thinking commitment and signed as the same thing in my head when they obviously are not the same.

Exactly, so if they are so hot after Thompson, then the jig is up for someone currently on the roster or someone that has signed a LOI and the staff probably already knows it.

They are still doing it in FB. Article today said Bama has to get rid of 12 before next fall. They only had room for 14 but are bringing in 26.

I think you are confused that the SEC has limited all schools to sign a hard maximum of 25 each year. They can't oversign the 25 max, which some were doing, knowing that they signed some academic casualties.

But, if Bama only has 20 scholarships available, I am pretty sure they can sign 25, thinking that there will be attrition in the offseason. I am fairly confident that still happens. Coaches just let the numbers work out.

You have to be careful with that practice because if you do it every year, something is bound to come up. But, if you do it every once in a while, knowing guys will leave, then I don't have a problem with it.

Uh this guy is really good. Saturday will be the 3rd time my home team, Lawrence County High School, has played Blackman. I hope he ends up at UT.
