2014 Illinois SG Peyton Allen

Sure. Ratings are just a services opinion. To me, a better evaluation is, "what do other high major coaches think about a player?" If a football player is a 3 star outside the top 250 but has offers from Florida, Bama, A&M, Georgia and Tenn then I think he is a pretty good player regardless of rating. Same for Allen. Two programs from the final four last year think he is worthy of an offer. That's good enough for me.

You go by ratings, I go by offers. Nothing wrong either way. It's your opinion and you are entitled to it. :hi:

I agree with that to an extent but I have come to realize that all offers are not the same and just bc someone shows a little interest does not mean they are a take. I went and looked at most of the teams that are recruiting him and very few of the fans of other teams are talking about him. That and the fact that he plays in a pretty small division and noone from his hometown state is really recruiting him. It raises alot of questions.

This class is not that great. And I have been one of Martin's biggest supporters. But I can't lie and act like this class is great. It's average. The players could play above their ratings and surprise people , or they could just be average. Neither one would surprise me. We still haven't recruited a legit athletic big with length. People acting like this class is a sure fire great or even good class are wrong. Last years class was way better. We really need Hubbs and DT to step up next year.

1. Last years class isn't better.
2. Cofer and Turman are legit 6'9 players
3. Nobody ever said this class is great. But the 4 players are good with high ceilings.

Cofer isn't an athletic big with length??

Not really imo. I mean a 6'10 to 7'+ shot blocker that most teams that make deep runs have. Cofer will probably be a good 4 and definitely can block some shots but he is not what I mean. I wouldn't say he is in the class of a Dieng or Cauley- Stein. We struggle against bigs 6'10 or better with any type of game. Can Cofer check and score over bigger players who are just as athletic? IDK. I don't think he a 5. We need a good 5. He may be Kenneth Faried like some think. But if he isn't that type of player we still need a legit big man. Not a whole team of 6'8 athletes.

1. By every service it was better. I would take Hubbs over any from this class by a long shot. I don't think Cofer and Austin are better than AJ/DT. Cornish is like alot of players we have. Long athletic questionable shot.

2 Cofer is 6'7 or 6'8 on everything I have ever seen. Turman has good size.

3 I agree they all have potential. I even said that the class could go either way. Play above rankings and be good or play to or below their rankings and be average. To me that is an average class.

Going back to one of the Chris' posts, sometimes we look to hard at the rankings. Example: If we didn't know Thompson or Hubbs ranking right now who would we have thought to be the better prospect? Not trying to argue, just sayin.

Roy Williams will be flying into see Peyton Allen play soon and North Carolina may offer.
All of Tennessee's recruits of the last two years are highly underrated with the exception of Ndwiaye. Both point guards (Thompson and Austin) will be drafted in the first round.
Cuonzo has done a good job of talent evaluation. My only disappointment with Peyton Allen is that we didn't offer in the early signing period before he blew up in the eyes of recruiters.

Am I being punked? Everything you said after Roy Williams/North Carolina is hilarious.

I would still says Hubbs bc of his immense athletic ability but u r correct that rankings arent the end all but they are a very good guide to go by. We may hit more than we miss in this class but I would feel much better if we were in on more of the top players.

Unfortunately we finished as a bridesmaid with all of the highly ranked guys we were after.

Cofer and Turman are at least an attempt to add a much needed front court.
why this wasn't addressed last recruiting season is beyond me. Misses on Hurt and Looney and no back up plan.

Put all our eggs into one basket for Nichols. There were reports he committed to us, but yeah that was a mistake. Also JW3 seemed like he wanted to be here but didn't fell "the love" at the open practice.

I guess they were trying. Going to be tough on the 2 freshmen next year if they can't come up with a late transfer.
Not much left in the JUCO ranks.
Possible 300 pound center we were in on early. Not sure that would help though.

Honestly unless a JUCO player is top 50 I wouldn't take a chance on him. JUCO's are suppose to be instant impact guys I would think and that hasn't happened for us. Pops is more coordinated than Yemi, but that's about it.

Shame because I think JW3 would have come here had we pushed harder. Nichols and JW3 aren't centers but they can play the 4 very well and would be nice to have experience there. JW3 is really doing well at Missouri.

Look at these numbers:

Nichols- 21 mpg/8 ppg/4rpg/1 bpg/55.6% FG%/52.8 FT%

JW3- 27.5 mpg/6.5 ppg/7.4 rpg/1.5 bpg/46 FG%/53.7 FT%

Would love to have had JW3......didnt understand why we didnt push harder for him.

Nichols told Martin he was coming to UT all the way until the day before he signed with Memphis. Not much we could've done about it. We didn't have room for both Nichols and Williams.

I believe that there was an understanding it was one or the other and both players were not going to end up at the same school. Martin felt his chances were better with Nichols.

He lost.

If you believe the rumors, mom had a big say in that.

As in, she purposely told him to lead us on?

Not necessarily leading him on, but with a couple days left before he committed, she basically said she didn't want him to leave Memphis, which threw a loop into the process.

Oh ok. I wouldn't think that they purposely did it, considering that Austin's sister is at UT. They probably didn't think it was that big of a deal until Mother realized she wanted to watch her son at home.

Here are my thoughts on this after reading about him and watching some film.

Right now with McRae and Barton leaving, this team does not have a zone buster. Cornish is a driver. Moore is a driver. Chevious is a liability on offense and Reese is too inconsistent from outside, plus isn't a wing anymore. Richardson/Hubbs will be relied upon to get in the paint and create/score for next year. Allen can come in and give 10-15 minutes of solid outside shooting to give better space for Richardson/Hubbs to drive.

I think he can play in the SEC. He'll never be a 30 minute a night guy. But if he is a better Skylar McBee, somebody that can shoot 38% from 3, solid defense, good rebounding from the wing, that's valuable.

I don't want to sound like an ******* to Q or Reese, but I feel like Allen would be a more valuable and consistent contributor to next year's team.

If you don't shoot 70% from the line we don't want. :)
