2014 UT-UF analysis?

I think UT beats most teams if Worley puts up three TD's a game while playing great and not making mistakes with the football.
We gotta have another Casey Clausen performance to win and I think Worley can put up those 3 TD's. Bottom line is that it will take some aggressive play calling to win against UF front 7. Screen passes and HB dive will not cut it.

What is your prediction if both teams came in at 0-4?

Given the home field advantage, given that we lost to three potential out of conference champions in their respective conferences and Georgia, given that Florida will have lost to two cupcakes, Kentucky, and Bama being the only explainable loss, I say advantage us.

Although as an edit I'll add Jones is more likely to still have his job at this point, but both Knoxville and Gainesville will have mobs looking for their respective coaches.

We better not be 0-4 going into that game. lol.

So would your prediction hold true if both teams came in at 2-2? 4-0?

I realize we have had a great recruiting year. But I seem to recall a lot of very slow and even possibly slow mentally players in the second and third levels of our defense last year. Those recruits might fill in some of those spots but that means we will be young and trusting players a year out of high school. Then you take the fact that we are totally replacing dl and ol lines and you have a recipe for a lot of ass whippings. I love my vols and hope I'm wrong, but we will lose to fla this year as usual. I think we will shock a couple of top tier programs this year but will also lose to a couple teams that we were suppose to beat. I think we are a year to two years away, if we continue to recruit well, from winning the east title. Go VOLS!!

Hey all. First thread here so hopefully it goes over well.

So obviously we're gonna be a pretty different team this year, and Florida will probably also be improved since they're getting a lot of injured players back (although not improved enough for Muschamp to keep his job imo).

Does anyone with more football knowledge than me know how we match up with them this year? Like, player v player, unit v unit? I've been wondering about this lately, as that will be a big game in deciding bowl eligibility.

Thanks for any info y'all have! :good!:

We match up very well with them. We will whoop them in out house in front of north of 103k

In my view, the game comes down to UF offense as I do not think that UT can score more than 20 pts., and 10-13 is more likely, really.

Florida's running game will be decent. Our passing game will continue to suck. I imagine that at 1-1 in the SEC at that point, and wanting to stay in the East mix, we will have realized by then that Driskel just blows and we have to accept that. With the week off after getting killed by 'bama, expect UF to run, run, and run some more.

Load up there and if you can keep us to less than 20 points you have a chance,. We score 21 + and I think we eek out another win.

FWIW, my long term sense is that UF is going to have a really tough year. Alabama, LSU, UGa, SC, FSU. Expectations amongst the fans is at a 20 year low, and that means season tix just not selling like usual, and that means $. By mid-season, Muschamp will be on the hottest seat in the country.

Over the last 9 meetings the UT offense has averaged 16 points, and hasn't scored more than 23 points. So the reality is that this statement is pretty accurate imo.

They will still be more talented than us this year overall. However I think if our guys show up ready to play and Neyland is loud and rowdy, we can beat them. I definitely think they will be better than many think.

Florida will probably have the biggest edge of all edges with its defensive line vs. Tennessee's offensive line.

Despite all the high minded stuff people throw out there, Florida wins this game every year because they win the battle up front.

Yep.
The day UT holds serve at the LOS they win.

Think Georgia atmosphere last year, with USC results, but a larger margin of victory.

Who are UFs big time players this year?

The "proven" guys are Dante Fowler, Vernon Hargreaves, III, and Andre Debose (as a kick returner). Those are the elite dudes in their respective roles.

There are a few players who I wouldn't call elite, but are definitely good players....guys like Kelvin Taylor, Jonathan Bullard, Antonio Morrison, etc.

There are several others in the "I'll believe it when I see it" category because I have heard things about offensive players for a few years now and none of it turned out to be true. So, until they show me, I'm a skeptic.

The defensive line is the strongest group on the team by far. Linebackers are good, but not much depth. Secondary is loaded with talent, but are young across the board.

On offense, I think you can call the running backs a solid group. Everyone else has to prove themselves, but there are a few WR's that people think can really play. As I said before, I'll believe it when I see it.

I think our Dline although young will get more pressure on whatever QB fl fields. We have more overall speed on the D so I think a W hinges on the the ability of the offense to move the ball. I think our o line will provide just enough and we win by a field goal or less.

99, do you have a finger on the pulse regarding the team's emotional state. Injuries were brutal last year and the offense was a train wreck. It appeared the wheels came off the bus. Are players optimistic and energized...wanting to walk through a brick wall for Muschamp? Are players pessimistic and gaurded....wanting to see Muschamp lead the team in spite of the uncontrollable (like injuries)?

Additionally, I think UT is energized. Optomism seems to be at a high given the last decade. We may not have all the players needed for a run but I think the team has bought in fully. We don't beat you with talent, but I'm hoping the engaged players + home field + Butch give us a solid shot.

I get the sense they are optimistic and support their coach. I really do.

1. Most of the team believes that the injuries were the reason for last year's record and so their confidence isn't shaken in that manner.

2. They are happy with the new offensive coordinator.

Now, every time any team changes coaches, everyone is enthusiastic about the change. Everyone thinks their will be some magic fairy dust that fixes everything. Usually, losing has something to do with the players (sometimes more so) than it does with the coaches.

IMO, I don't think it will take much to take Florida's emotional state one way or another.

For sake of argument, if the offense actually is improved (please lord), then the energy from that will lift the level of play from the defensive guys. Florida doesn't have to light up the scoreboard to be a dangerous team, they just can't be pathetic. It will energize fans, too.

However, if a pathetic offense shows up, I think they will break emotionally and so will fans.

I kind of feel like there is no middle ground here. Florida will be really good or really bad. If I were a betting man, I'd lean toward really bad just because I've never seen the offense function close to anything reasonable.

Florida Defense will be solid. They have a great Dline but no Easley and a great secondary but no Purifoy.

Florida offense is iffy. Driskell and Jones coming off injuries. Transfers and other departures. Their Oline might be a mess...I hope. They have to learn a Offense with Roper. I think their WRs are average and Dubose is coming off injury.

Key Matchups: TN WRs vs FL secondary, TN oline vs tough FL Dline, shaky FL oline vs young TN Dline.

Tough to gauge this one: Probably a close UT win or a FL blows out a young frustrated team.

It's going to be tough to beat the Gators until we can match up physically with their offensive and defensive lines (They still have pretty darn good athletes) and a little help from above.

Appreciate the insight. Hope your kids have an injury free season....serious injuries, that is. Also hope your team come into Neyland with a shaken confidence and leaves with a decimated spirit.
