2019 Target List

Kinda interesting Thorpe didn't include Tennessee as one of the 4 he was "focusing in on". As for pg tho, if we miss on Mann, I'm leaning toward preferring Jones. Mills may be a better scorer, but I think Jones would be more of an instant impact on both ends of the floor, especially at point guard spot.

Yea I’ve not heard Thorpe mention Tennessee, I’m not sure why he got those CB’s by 247 but I don’t see that happening, could always be wrong I guess. He’s not mentioned them and he’s already narrowed his list a bit and started setting up visits so unless he holds off until spring he or Jitoboh don’t seem likely.

As for PG...I like both guys, Tyrell Jones is likely headed for Top 100 ranking and Mills probably 100-150 range, both have some nice potential. Mills on the surface seems to be a guy we will have a better chance with, he’s from NC where we’ve got a lot of connections, he’s also an extremely smart kid (just offered by Harvard) so you know he’s someone similar that the staff has recruited before, he also doesn’t have as long a list of suitors at this point as Jones.

No inside intel there just my gut as to which one would be more likely of the two, my guess is Tennessee remains in close contact with both and will attempt to set up OV’s for both sometime in October/November, by then an announcement from Mann will almost certainly have happened and if needed they’ll have a Plan B in place.

Good points and not just cause I agree. 😆 Hypothetically you could get Mills or Jones who you got? Granted in this scenario we’re bummed cause we missed on Mann, just curious your thoughts

Honestly I’ve not dove in enough on either to base the answer on either ones game, I’m still of the mindset we are getting Mann :)

What I will say though is that I believe they would have a very good chance at landing Tandy if they prioritized, the fact they offered Mills and Jones suggest to me they like both of those guys more than Tandy. I like Tandy’s game quite a bit so I feel pretty good about either of those guys potential, especially given they will have a year to learn behind Bone on what should be a pretty good team.

Im not sure why some people are so down on Barne's recruiting. We are having this discussion b/c the severely under-ranked, under developed, but now developed 2016 class + Kyle Alexander, blew up this year and won a share of the Southeastern Conference and a trip to the tournament as a 3 seed. Watching the film of Pember and Gaines, they are severely under-ranked as well. Yes Gaines and Pember need to put on weight, but they are much better than advertised. Let's not forget we just added Burns too who has a massive frame at 6'9 260lbs. We may not land the so called blue chippers this round, but I bet ours develop into solid players.

Yeah I just lowered my % on landing Mann, still think he ends up a Vol. Plus I don’t trust highlight videos and didn’t know if you had saw more than what’s immediately available for either guy. And love to hear that bout Tandy. Staff can do a temp check and if the scenario plays out try to make a late push. Hard to be mad or worried when your worst case scenario is pretty dang good.

Fewer are down on Barnes in general, though many, myself included, remain miffed at the inability to land any of our top options with so much to sell currently in terms of winning results, fan support, AD support, recognition, etc. I don’t necessarily believe it will lead to our demise. He’s proven he can win with underranked/unknown potential players. It’s just very odd that we can’t land any high level guys in what should seem like a very promising offseason sandwiched between a top-15 finish and a top-10 preseason ranking.

Land Mann, and everyone probably goes back to being happy.

Teams like Wisconsin and Virginia Tech also are after Beran.

He’s got game, those and the 20+ other offers prove it. Just not a good sign for the Mann/Walker combo. Shame too, cause I think Walker would be happy here if he gave UT half a shot.

Much like Mills & Jones he seems like a guy who really has improved his stock and is a hot name, this isn’t a panic offer that people panicked about in the past and said we were desperate.

Imo Mills & Jones are guys the staff watched and liked just as much if not more than Tandy and so they offered. With Beran we know they want to add another wing, they probably like him similarly to say Patrick Williams and decided to offer. The only thing that surprises me about this offer is that his game is similar to Pember, I would’ve thought they’d looked for a little different style if they were looking to add another wing.

Would be awesome to land those 2, but I would also be pretty happy with Mills/Beran/Gaines...I’m sure on the surface many would bummed out but it’s still an uptick in the rankings as to what we were bringing in.

Assuming they make strides absolutely. But until CRB lands a primo is all excuses and hopes.

What should we make of UT not making Walker's top 12? Does that count us out of Mann too, do you think? And haven't we been watching Walker's every game this summer? Really weird we're not in it.

Walker and Mann are on the same team, so being at every one of Mann’s games automatically means you’re also at every one of Walker’s games, along with every other player for that AAU team...it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re recruiting every one of those guys though.

I definitely thought we would make Walker’s Top 12, that was surprising to me given that we seemingly were in early and really liked him. Rob Lewis of VQ was asked about it and his thoughts paraphrased...”definitely thought UT would be Top 12 but not sure you are going to see Tennessee seriously involved with any player who is heavily considering Alabama, LSU and Miami. Tennessee liked him early on but as he blew up he’s a guy that has definitely enjoyed the hype”.

Take those comments to mean what you want but I take them as those programs are a bit shady and that’s not something Tennessee is even willing to entertain. Like it or not the sales pitch isn’t going to change regardless of recruiting ranking next to their name, for a lot of guys that doesn’t sit too well with them.

This...I think we often underestimate how much of a constraint it is if you are not willing to play the game (even a little bit) when dealing with these highly rated recruits. Given what Barnes has been able to accomplish with regard to building a highly competitive program in such a short time, I am perfectly fine with his recruiting pitch “as is” and I think the most overlooked (and under-appreciated) aspect of it may be that it effectively filters out the kids who are not ultimately not going to be a good fit for the team’s character and chemistry that Barnes and staff are so carefully cultivating.

I’ve obviously been a huge supporter of Barnes strategy, but to play devils advocate here the only thing I would say is that if they got that vibe from Walker they should’ve moved on long ago. Now maybe they did and we just didn’t realize it as being at Mann’s games meant also being at Walker’s, but just a thought.

As I’ve already mentioned in this thread, it may not excite the fan base and it may disappoint some people, but getting a class of say Caleb Mills, Robbie Beran, Davonte Gaines would be just fine with me. They’re ranked a bit higher than what most our previous guys were but they seemingly are guys that are willing to put in the work and stick it out which is becoming a rarity. Landing a guy like CJ Walker does you no good if he transfers after his freshman year because he is pissed about his playing time, just ask Mississippi State.

No this isn’t to say all highly ranked guys are that way, but a lot of them are so it definitely narrows the pool a bit.

Vols offer another 2019 forward

Zach Freemantle, Bergen Catholic, Center (BK)

Both Beran and Freemantle were mentioned by Bossi in that biggest stock boosters article that Mills & Jones were also mentioned in.

BasketballRecruiting.Rivals.com - Bossi's Best: July stock boosters

Robbie Beran:
Why did his stock rise? I think with Beran it was mostly about college coaches getting a good look. He's probably going to play the role of stretch forward in college but allows for the versatility of being a big three or floor spacing four man due to his size and good athleticism.

Who is involved? Just a month or so ago, Beran appeared to be close to picking Boston College, but now they've got competition from Nebraska, Dayton, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas State and Georgia Tech among many more.

Zach Freemantle:
Why did his stock rise? I liked Freemantle a lot during the spring, but I absolutely loved what I saw from him at the Peach Jam and then the Fab 48. He's a big with touch, toughness and a dose of athleticism. He competes on both ends and is going to be a horse once he gets into a college weight room.

Who is involved? Boston College was the first high major to offer at the Peach Jam and since then Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Xavier, Minnesota and VCU are among those to join programs like St. Joseph's, Lehigh and Bucknell who were prioritizing him prior to July.

Tyrell Jones:
Why did his stock rise? Jones is another who mostly benefited from the exposure of college coaches attending mega events, because I don't think his speed or confident scoring are recent developments with his game. But once we all got to see him it was clear that he's a high level talent and he'll likely enter the 2019 rankings as a four-star during the next update.
Who is involved? Auburn, Florida, Louisville, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Western Kentucky, Houston, Wichita State and VCU are among the 30 or so programs who have now offered scholarships.

Caleb Mills:
Why did his stock rise? Because he can play either the point or shooting guard position and because he creates space to score via jumpers and floaters with ease, Mills really took off. He was pretty much off the radar until he started going to work at several Southeastern stops throughout the month of July.

Who is involved? Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Harvard, Wake Forest,Auburn, Marquette, Saint Louis, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Florida State, Providence, Clemson, VCU, Mississippi State and a host of others jumped in during July and he may have landed more offers in the last three weeks than any other player in the country.
