BTO - what do you make of those 3 offers?

Rick Barnes went and watched Gaines this past weekend, since then we’ve offered Pember, Walker, Williams and Gantt. All 4 of them are 6’7”-6’8” small forwards, Gaines is a 6’7” SF...on the surface it would sure seem like maybe he’s not going to be in this class, but I honestly haven’t heard that, simply looking at these offers and putting 2/2 together so I could definitely be wrong.

Obviously we need a guard, possibly even 2 but that doesn’t appear to be a given...so with 4 spots: guard, Gaines, Burns and then 1 spot left, maybe the staff feels the need with the 4th spot is another SF type? Again I would personally think guard or even big would be more pressing unless Gaines or someone else is leaving, but that’s JMO at this stage.

Had the same thought. Also wondered if it’s possible someone on the current roster was leaving but I would think that would have to be Jalen and I don’t think that’s happening.

Had similar thoughts myself. Seems like we may be trying to upgrade on Gaines. I guess that's the downside to taking a commitment from a kid 2 years away from graduation.

Same thought went through my head, but haven’t heard anything about that either so not sure.

Even if that was the case I'm not sure you'd try to replace him immediately with 2 players cut from that mold. Would mean less competition for Pons in that backup role to Admiral but I wouldn't think there would be an urgency to sign two 6'7" SF guys in this class.

Probably need to watch Gaines.

No reason that 3 or even 4 6'7" players couldn't be on the court at the same time if they're quick, well conditioned, can handle the ball, and a couple of them can hit outside shots.

It seems that Gaines was injured during the AAU tournament while the staff was there so there may be a concern that he can't hold up physically. I think his year at Hargrave will prove whether or not he is a Div. 1 prospect. The facilities are top-notch, so he will get the chance to get stronger.

I agree completely. As the post below yours mentioned he was injured while Barnes was there, maybe it’s a contingency to get us in the door with someone while they track Gaines the rest of AAU. Like you’re saying though, I have a hard time seeing them add Gaines and one of those guys I listed.

We should just recruit all 7 footers with that skill set and rotate them in and out seamlessly.

If we can get a bunch of 6'7" players with the skills we should sign all of them. Our current SEC POY, that plays with his back to the basket, is only about 6'5". Same deal with Schofield.

Last year:

6'0" Daniel
6'1" Turner
6'1" Darrington
6'3" Bone

6'5" Bowden
6'5" Schofield
6'5" Pons

6'7" Johnson
6'7" Williams (more like 6'5" IMO)

6'8" Walker
6'9" Fulkerson
6'10" Kent
6'11" Alexander

6'7" with guard skills seems like an ideal combination. They aren't that common and the best are probably filling up the blue blood rosters.

Denny Crum had great success with lineups just like this. Some of the best teams in college ball during his time at Louisville.

Exactly. One of my favorite, if not my all time favorite, NBA point guards was 6'9" and ran the Lakers offense for 13 years.

Grant Williams is 6'7". I have stood next to him and I am 6'6".

I've watched the Pember kid play since his middle school days. IMO, he's a guard in a "big's" body...kind of the opposite of Grant Williams. He hasn't put up gaudy #'s at Bearden due to the team being loaded in the backcourt with two guards that shoot the ball a lot.

As someone said earlier in the thread, if he bulks up and develops some post moves, he could be a nice pick-up for Barnes.

BTO - where are we at with Kira Lewis and KyKy Tandy?

Doing some reading on Lewis and it seems like Bama 1st and maybe we are 2nd. He's visited both schools and our coaches have visited him. Auburn in the mix up there at the top too.
