2020 Presidential Race

The Coal Industry Has Lost Almost One Thousand Jobs Since Trump Became President

What the data says:

Coal Jobs
  • November 2016: 50.700
  • January 2017: 51,000
  • February 2020: 50,100 (down 900 since Trump’s inauguration)
The Dow Jones U.S. Coal Index tracks the coal industry subsector. When Trump was elected in November 2016 the index was around 45 and closed on Friday at 8.57, down approximately 80%. There have been numerous mine closures and bankruptcies during his time in office, with little positive outlook for the industry.

This is not a political issue. In a free market system it is important to bring something to market that people and markets want. Coal is not profitable, and coal mining is not a skill set the markets demand.

In America we shouldn't have state sponsored jobs. We need a nimble workforce.

Coal still is profitable it's just being mechanized more and more like many other jobs.

Not really.
You're not trying to say that it's worsening at a constant rate are you? Because that would be categorically wrong.

And when do you think this worsening trend began?

Plus we should never forget that some found segregation divisive and some found integration divisive, but they were in no way comparable in their justifications.
And there is a pretty vocal contingent of the black community that think integration is wrong and is applying segregation.

It's not a one way street. Hasnt been for a while.

Yes, the coal that can be extracted without many workers is where the industry has its future, but that is true of many industries each in their own way.

Coal should be dying and should have died off decades ago had we invested in nuclear. It still boggles my mind that people want to kill coal and natural gas due to pollution and yet fight nuclear.

Of course you don't want me to go there, because it's at that exact moment that you Trumpers lose your argument.
Trumpers: "Everybody is sh!t, so it doesn't matter that Trump is sh!t."
What a horrible foundation upon which to build your support.
You know, as well as most every other Trumper, that Trump is worse........across multiple categories.
The attempt to equalize all negatives is pathetic.
It's just as stupid as attempting to equalize all positives.
Uh you have clearly stated that you will vote for anyone not Trump. That is exactly what you are doing, equalizing all negatives.

100% agree. Oak Ridge solved the meltdown problem decades ago and their design was never used, and reactors have only gotten safer since then. Windmills and solar are simply primitive technology waiting for a storage technology that is still not quite there--great for the individual house or farm but not what we should be investing in as an advanced 21st century nation.

The ability of political money to smother good ideas and keep bad ones operative is crushing us.

This is one issue I think the far left just got wrong from the start and doesn’t want to admit it. I think their dislike of nuclear is rooted in anti-nuclear weapons sentiment from the Cold War era. If you’re serious about fighting climate change and believe it’s an urgent issue, the arguments against nuclear just aren’t very good.

I'd agree, and add Chernobyl and a lesser 3 mile island is what really killed the public's ability to want to use nuclear along with the connotation of nuclear in terms of weaponry.

I have clearly stated that I will vote for anyone less horrendously despicable than Trump. That's the opposite of equalizing.
Anyone less. How is that not equalizing? You've clearly stated that you dont care about any of the issues but Trump. You cant even define what those issues are, you rely on muh Trump. That equalizes everyone else under: NOT TRUMP.

Guys and gals at Oak Ridge built this liquid sodium reactor off their 1954 design. In a sane world this would have been the end of any energy and attendant climate conflicts.

Wut??
Of course I care about issues, that's why I'm liberal.
I also care about character such.

Agree. My dad is one of the most respected Nuclear Engineers in the world, and is responsible for much of the NRC Quality Assurance programs........when I was home last and talked to him, he said this very simple statement......

ZERO PERCENT FAILURE RATE.........that is the reality.......there is and can be nothing, but, a 0.00000 to infinity failure rate. Nothing in life excpet death carries such a percentage.

I'd say this instead Luth, you care because you are human, and an American, liberal has nothing to do with it. Many liberals, and conservatives, and all other walks of life fall short of truly caring. Philosophies and points of view aside, righteousness and real truth is and should be the standard for all. Those are the things every human inantely and internally "feels" in their soul, or at least should.

As to character, real character, it's hard to find. But, that is why it is and should be held in high regard.

True.
I wasn't saying being liberal made me care about issues, but that the issues that I care about made me liberal.
I couldn't agree more with your final statement.
