I don't know why you can't understand why the FF's thought to prevent that from happening. There had to be compromise to make unification worth it for the individual states. The U.S. didn't just spring into existence as one country. It's in the name. "United States of America" Now fifty states united. Each state gets a voice and is not ruled over by another state. Seems like a simple concept to me, but some struggle to understand.

I'll share with you what I've shared with others to describe the relationships between voters, states, and our federal government.

The three participants above are in a dance of governance. In this dance, no one is supposed to lead. All should have an equal footing...it is structured this way to prevent one's power and influence stepping on the others.
Citizens are represented by Representatives.
States are represented by Senate (since amended).
Federal concerns are represented by the President.
Much of the negotiation and concern when the states began the process of unionization dealt with assurances all 3 parties of the dance are protected.

There must be a way to provide verification, double verification, triple verification. Email everyone a receipt, have them acknowledge, then forward to multiple locations. When count is done, compare the lists to be sure.

I am confident we are collectively smart enough to come up with a way to do this that is even more secure than currently.

I think partially it being force fed to people as well. The people at the top of these political machines make a lot of money. There are very few people at the top. Millions of people gives thousands a dollars every year to these machines. As a society, we are no further along than we were years ago. There are people that have been creating and passing laws more than 20 years. How can a 60,70,80 year old individual effectively legislate for a changing demographic, economy, society, world. So yes, we all have to change, but we can't change until we are able to have civil discourse. I am just as guilty about that as the next person.

I've been advocating Congressional term limits for years. But it goes beyond even that. You have people of influence who were never even elected, and that's a problem.

I may be a naive idealist but I do not believe unity would dictate less appeal to the base(s). Liberty, economic stability, a better future for our kids, peace, justice, et al....the high minded themes are shared among the majority.

The unity ship has sailed and is never coming back to port. I don't think even a powerful external threat would bring us back together.
