2022 Recruits

Those times have passed. Can we get that back i have faith we can. Tennessee right now slow plays the ones that would commit on spot till they fall in love with something else. Its good in way to keep it hush but in another since why do it. Go out put the T on and get them. Stop slow playing and get one or two that bleed orange then set back wait on the stallion to come then at least you are not on 4th 5th option.
I've had the feeling we were doing that with some players and it has hurt us before and probably will again.

I get that too, we've heard/read often that so many players "bleed orange" and want to come and be a Lady Vol, but actions speak louder than words. Many of these players (some of the Top players) in the past have waited late in the process to announce their final choice. So even if we were late in the process, if they really bleed orange, they would come. Although not the same caliber as some of the Top 10 players, we often heard how Tess "bled orange" and really wanted to be a Lady Vol. She was offered late by a staff just arriving on campus and when the offer came, she didn't hesitate to accept it and announce us as her school.

A lot of these players (as we have seen with the transfer portal) aren't "allowed" to go where they truly want to go because those handling their recruitment is steering them in the direction that best work for them and not the player. But that's a story for another day.

Cooper, Watkins, Barker other top players have offers from a lot of schools and so until they get down to a top five no reason to consider them serious. If you got a player say top 50 that is ranked at these players positions but three or four rankings below them and they want to come now what do you do? Every case is different depending on your independent evaluation of the players. Latson would be a no brainer as would Smith. A player like Tyler you probably try to slow move on but only if you are getting enthusiastic feedback from a player like Cooper. You give the top players some time but not to much time. If you have a player top 50 or just outside that is ready to commit you can't wait to long.

My exact thinking!

Imo you have to save 2 open schollys for a player like Barker or any elite player that wants to go down to the wire every year. The key is not too have any wasted scholarships to players that are going to stick around for 5 years but never contribute due to flaws in their game that are likely too difficult to overcome.

Barker is UGA or Ole Miss

Sa’Myah Smith has received an offer from LSU. Can we add LSU to the mix ? Or will TN land Smith ?

Was thinking Baylor until Mulkey moved. We'll see if she likes the new coach at Baylor only and hour from home. LSU would seem to be right there with Mulkey. Tennessee seems a little out of range but we'll see what happens soon.

Good teams do not need to use all their scholarships anyway in WBB. Not having or making room for top ten talent would be inexcusable under any circumstance. Agee about not tying up scholarships for four, or worse, five years with kids that can’t contribute. Usually the factor that eliminates them is lack of athleticism which is almost always apparent year one. If it isn’t above a threshold, it’s best for all parties if they are encouraged to find an appropriate level home.

I still hold out hope that Kellie and staff will land Smith and maybe more to go with Justine. There is probably a lot going on behind the scenes that we know nothing about. I understand the need to hold info close but wish we knew more.

I know absolutely nothing about recruiting and maybe, other than Justine, we struck out for ‘22 (although it still seems early to think that to me). But, I can envision there might be strategic value in keeping things close to the vest.

also with the portal changes,, it would be wise to keep a door open JIC

I usually see 2 factors for players that can't contribute.

1. Can't defend.
2. Can't shoot.

#1 speaks to the athleticism issue you brought up.
#2 is likewise readily apparent to anyone with a set of eyes at a shoot around.

Really comforting to know how hard Sara Puckett is working this spring and summer to build up her body and physical strength plus endurance. She is going to come to Tennessee far advanced over the average freshman. She will already have the strength and endurance you need to be successful in the SEC.

Let's hope so. Also, Striplin is considered to have a college ready physique. Let's hope she's ready to go, too. Those two would really bolster our front court if they can contribute significantly this season.

I believe they will contribute a lot once they get settled in. In fact, all of them will get significant minutes to get them ready for SEC play.
