2023-2024 Coaching Carousel

strange. he had a decent year for Boston College. seems like it would have to be a pay cut too, he was making 4 million a year.
I don’t think it’s all that strange. Bruce Feldman said he wouldn’t be surprised if over the next few years half of the top 20 coaches in CFB are in the NFL or retire early.

Here’s Hafley’s quote on making the move
"College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There’s no time to coach football anymore."

The sport is broken at the moment.

I don't fault any of them for making the jump from college to the NFL, quality of life has to be much better in the league than in college.

Most NFL teams aren't the 3 and out job rotations like college teams are either.

The pay is very good in the college game, but it has evolved into something where the quality of life for a head coach has to be miserable. Making $8+ million a year is winning the lottery, but there’s something to be said about not having family time, time for yourself, a sense of balance in your life is important no matter what kind of money you’re bringing in. The sport needs an overhaul for a variety of reasons, one of them being that good/great will find the NFL more appealing because they can focus on football only, like Hafley.

The actual in season coaching is probably tougher in the NFL with the constant scheming, scouting/self scouting, film study, etc. However, an NFL coach is solely focused on actual football and working with adult players. College coaching has always had a lot of off field responsibilities, especially recruiting. Nowadays it seems like these guys have to recruit their current players as much as high school kids in addition to the constant fundraising. I understand this stuff wearing coaches out. It’s a mess right now.

That's a head scratcher to me, unless he is just getting out before he's forced out.

I mean, they were trying to can him at the end of last season but UCLA beat USC and tied their hands

Might as well get out of your own accord if something interesting pops up.

If I'm Ryan Day, I'd realize they just hired my replacement if I don't start beating MI and going deep in the CFP.
I doubt it. His star has really fallen since the Oregon days.

I think their fans would riot if they fired Day to hire Kelly, with the possible exception of if they have some otherworldly offense with Kelly as OC. And let's be honest, if OSU has an otherworldly offense with Kelly as OC, Day isn't going anywhere.

The real sea change in the sport is the Portal. CFB has always been about fundraising and recruiting. NIL I guess adds another dimension to fundraising, but all it is really doing is bringing something that happened below the table above the table.

This whole "re-recruiting your own team every year" thing, which really is absurd, is because of the Portal. Nothing else. Not even professional coaches have to deal with that. It would be like Patrick Mahomes leaving the Chiefs after this season and joining the 49ers because they offered him more money.

Kelly also interviewed at Seattle for OC.
I'm not sure it's a great hire. Seems his fame was a long time ago.

Not sure how this can be construed as anything but a good hire.

Kelly wanted out & UCLA has been ready to can him for years.

Kelly definitely gave them the finger on the way out.

I’ve always thought you can have uncapped NIL and you can have unchecked free agency, but you can’t have them at the same time. One of them has to go.
