2023 Recruiting

Things we don't know: We think Horston, Jackson, and Key will leave after their senior seasons, but they each have another year of covid eligibility, so who knows?

About those three what if they can make more NIL than W salary? I'd guess the LV lifestyle is better than the W lifestyle as well. Seems like the W would be a tough grind. Then you have to play overseas to make ends meet.

I'm going to wager, 30-40% of this list will end up in the portal by year 3

Why?

Is that consistent with recent history?

With the transfer portal now? Yes... go look at that 2020 class. Most these kids give the school 1-2 years before hitting the door.

Reese- Transferred
Cardoso- Transferred
Diamond Johnson- Transferred
Parrish- Transferred
Priscilla Williams- Transferred
Dalyah Daniels- Transferred
Kylee Watson- Transferred
Gusters- Transferred
Goforth- Transferred
Dugalic- Transferred
Poole- Transferred
McLean- Transferred

That is almost half of the top 25 players and I wager NIL will make things even more crazy. It has become not about basketball anymore per say but "what can you do for me" with kids wanting to profit off of NIL and getting opportunities. The chances of most these kids being able to maintain a job in the WNBA is on the low end as is.

Thanks. That's interesting. It raises another question—-How many of these kids have a real impact (consistent with their original top 25 ranking) on their new team?

Womens NIL? Maybe we’re taking a few thousand dollars…. They’ll not draw the kind of money the men do unless they’re a Candance Parker level talent.

That is true but I'm just speaking in general terms. Most players simply won't be a mainstay in the WNBA, its difficult as is to get and stay in the league. All I am saying is with that in mind, kids will do what they can do try to maximize themselves as much as possible while in college and on a full scholarship. Its not just about the now but its about long term. But that is not why everyone transfers, people may not like their coaches, get playing time, or feel there is another place that can better their talents.

But you do have players who aren't what I call super stars in basketball but they have a brand based on things outside of basketball so they can benefit from all of this. Flaujae, T

We have to find comparable replacements for Key, Horston, and Jackson. Not an easy task but we'll see what happens between April and next July. I think there is a very minimal chance that any of the three return for their covid year unless the NIl money is just to much to go to the WNBA. I would say 200 grand a player would give them cause to stay more than they could get in the WNBA with a guaranteed contract.

That assumes that corporate sponsors would end relationships with players when they graduate and go to the W. It's early days for NIL and we don't yet know if, for example, a Nike or Adidas deal with a college player would or would not continue post graduation.
The better WNBA players have endorsement deals with big brands, so it seems likely that the best college players' choices would be (1) stay in school and earn NIL $, or (2) go to the W and get a modest salary plus endorsement deal(s) $.

True they could take it with them from any corporate deals. I was thinking more about the Lady Vol donation fund.

I do hope some or all will return, but if they do I have my doubts it'll be because NIL opportunities are so lucrative they aren't ready to give them up. If anything -- and I am TOTALLY SPECULATING -- it'll be more because of the harsh reality that painfully few draftees actually end up on a roster after all the cuts are made. It's brutal, and I'm thinking some Lady Vols had to have been thinking last year, "If Rennia Davis can't make a final roster, will I?"

Also, there seems to be more honest talk from veteran WNBA players aimed at college players telling them they'd better darn well fully appreciate all the perks of being a college basketball player because they'll one day realize those were the best years of their basketball lives. And we all know, like Candace Parker knows and has told the girls, that Lady Vols are treated VERY well. They travel first class, they are fawned over and fairly pampered, fans adore them and clamor for the chance just to be near them. Once they turn pro they are too often reduced to just a pile of insecure nerves, wondering how long they'll have a job. Pro players' travel schedules are brutal. They've got to pamper THEMSELVES because adults have to take care of their own stuff!

So, my hope is that more and more college players will take advantage of all they college time they can possibly have, because the brutal life of the adult pro player will still be there when they've finally used all their college eligibility. In fact, most great, draft-worthy players will have only gotten BETTER at the game and in maturity with an extra year of college, so ... why rush into it when they don't have to?

It is a strong draft playing another year at Tennessee probably helps Key more than Horston or Jackson. Of course Key could explode this year although kind of hard to do when you have Horston and Jackson dominating the scoring. I expect all three may leave which makes the portal totally reliant to our future success. No doubt we have to replace these three players with at least a couple at their talent level.

Not to worry guys, Coach Kellie will go into the Portal and get what she needs, it's Kellies way...

I'm sure she has a plan in place and has a list of veteran names that may be available when the proper time comes....After all, these veteran players come to us, like new presents, with their batteries already included..

It's all good!

It's unlikely you can replace Jackson, Horston or Key with an equally talented player individually. The chances of replacing all 3 with an equally talented player is zero
