2023 Recruiting

It's unlikely you can replace Jackson, Horston or Key with an equally talented player individually. The chances of replacing all 3 with an equally talented player is zero
Not zero but certainly low. I mean you could get Janiah Barker, Annesah Morrow, Teonni Key or Taniya Latson just as examples and close the gap almost totally. Not saying any of those girls will be in the portal but some of similar talent will be. That is where we got Jackson and Hollingshead who thought they would be in the portal.

We all will need to keep a close watch on which programs, if any, could possibly be changing coaches after this season, because coaching changes give great players guilt-free opportunities to move on themselves.

Anyone got any ideas which coaches might be on the hot seat this season if they don't make a deep run? Or any who could take a step up?

Remains to be seen who that would be as in the womens game you really have to have a bad season when expectations are high. I think players that think they are going to be the go to player and are not plus injured players that have to sit out and decide they need to go somewhere else. Grad Transfers who have another season plus mid majors who have a lot of players better than where they are playing like Destinee Wells who wouldn't want her on their team. Also coaches taking different jobs usually create transfers that is how we got Jillian and Jasmine Franklin and in to some extent Rickea. Powell was fed up with the coach at Minnesota which was the major reason she was on the move. So all these reasons will add up to probably 50 or 60 elite to very good players that can play in the SEC. You don't know who they are now, but there will be some more Rickea Jackson, Angel Reese, Diamond Johnson, and Esmery Martinez etc type players. Half the top ten high school players from 2020 have transferred somewhere and are not at their original school this season. I'd look for maybe someone from SC to again look to move if they do to much bench sitting. We could even have a couple on our team you never know. I just know there will be a lot of very good players to try and recruit.

Makes absolutely no sense. Players that enter the portal are those who have transferred away from another program.
Recruiting is recruiting.

Exactly. Just like saying to pro sports no more trading because it distroys a team. It's funny because ppl doesn't realize the importance of portal. It's a gamble because we can get top players, again we might not, but if we get top players that's a bingo..

It's funny because ppl ///doesn't /// realize

Should be: It's funny because people DON'T realize.

Basic grammar--sorry, but mistakes like this are a poor reflection on the board.

Living in the portal will destroy a program
Certainly remains to be seen especially in basketball and since the portal is totally something new. The fact that players are immediately eligible makes it the same as high school recruiting except the players have experience already. Not like we haven't recruited any high school players as half the players on the team were recruited out of high school that would be Puckett, Darby, Wynn, Striplin, Pissott, Suarez, and Miles. Then you have two holdover high school players Horston and Key. So it is not like dependence has been totally on the portal. Yes it would have been great to sign a couple this year, but it doesn't look like a deal breaker with 9 players and possibly more returning. You just need to add two or three more from the portal and your still one of the top teams in the country.
Also we could've signed some players in the lower part of the top 100 if we wanted to do that, but then all the negatives would be saying why did we sign those players? Staff went after the top 25 players and when you do that your dealing with 75 or more other schools that are going after them also. Recruiting has to be judged certainly , but only by what the final roster looks like not where the players came from.

I think that those predicting doom for the program, because of the lack of high school recruits, are worried long term. Certainly, this year the LV's will be among the top teams in the country. The uncertainty comes into play in the following years.

If you consistently strikeout recruiting high school players, then you MUST get multiple quality players from the portal. A failure to do so would set the program back years.
Look at this year's team. If Key, Horston and Jackson turn pro after this upcoming season, the chances of replacing them with players of equal ability are practically zero.

A more likely result would be to get a few good, but not great, players from the portal.
And that's if we're successful in the next portal event. If we do less well then that we will still have a decent team, but not one that will challenge for the SEC title or final 4.

Ideally, there would be a combination of a couple of highly rated high school recruits combined with players from the portal each year. Those portal players can either fill needs or be a difference maker that takes the team to another level (Hopefully, Jackson is that player this year).

Please note: I don't think depending heavily on the portal is CKJH's premeditated, long term strategy. I think it's a result of missing out on wanted high school players.

Here's another POSSIBLE problem with depending so heavily on the portal. If you continually bring in players from the portal to start for your team, (Which we have most likely done this year and will probably have to next year) what does that tell the freshman and sophomore players on your team ? Or high school recruits that are thinking of joining your program ? It tells them that there's a good likelihood that an unknown, more experienced player from the portal will be your competition for playing time in the upcoming years. Not the best atmosphere for recruiting high school players.

Depending on the portal so heavily for players is not, imo, an optimal strategy for long term, consistent success. The question remains, why has such an historically successful and currently attractive program done so poorly (Justine being the exception), in recruiting high school players the last 2 years ?

"If u cn red ths msg, u cn gt a dm jb !!!!"
Interestingly, the forum's auto editor wouldn't allow me to post the original quote. It wouldn't let me put g and d together, which would go where dm is now.

If there were a reporter worth their salt covering the program we would know the answer to this question. And the other problem is the coaches have not put out a counternarrative for our lack of success so opponents are free to fill in the blanks to their advantage.

The only place recruiting from the portal is being discussed as an issue comes from a pocket of fans on this forum. In every collegiate sport both women & men the portal has become a prized possession in recruiting.
This is just people complaining for no good reason. You folks have at it.. there’s nothing to validate this argument of any sort of short-term or long term impact on Coach Harper recruiting process.
The main issue I’m hearing is most of you are offended because you don’t have inside information. And you shouldn’t. Negative recruiting against Tennessee is irrelevant if it’s going on. Look at the players that have committed here or stayed under Coach Harper era… 5 players (Franklin, Powell, Key, Horston, and Jackson) were named to preseason (position) top player lists, one soph. (Puckett) and one freshman (Pissott) earned watchlist honors, one of the nation’s top underclassmen transfers is a former HS all-American(Hollingshead), three made all-sec first team (Jackson, Key, and Horston) and Coach Harper is the SEC Preseason Coach of the Yr. Last but not least Marta Suarez is arguably one of the most talented players in the country returning from injury after being an All-SEC selection her freshman year. I heard people raving about Arkansas’s prolific 3pt specialist Ramirez all last season, well you have a prolific scorer/ 3pt specialist returning as a LV in Marta along w/ newcomer Justine. True fans get behind these players and stop glorifying every HS recruit based on recruiting service rankings.
Who in their right mind wastes this kind of energy making one factor outweigh several factors of a winning program?
The LV program is in a great position right now. In a better position than most. That’s why this team is ranked 4th/5th in the nation. There’s no asterisk. They have a great culture. The staff is honoring each and every player that commits to the program and the player development is at an all-time high. Recruiting is recruiting.
A year or two from now the same critics will likely be complaining when Coach Harper passes on a player in the portal for a highly rated HS recruit.
The embarrassment is not HS recruiting it’s the audacity of some calling themselves a fan to constantly promote this propaganda.
Some of you folks won’t ever be satisfied.. even when the LVs win another national championship.

For the record, a yes or no question.
Are you OK with Tennessee not signing players out of high school and depending on the portal as the source for new players ?
