2023 Target List

On the recruiting front Tennessee absolutely rolled out the red carpet for five-star 2023 prospect Justin Edwards and it seemed to have an impact. Edwards had previously made an official visit to Kentucky in November on a weekend when the Wildcats had a home game. From the buzz we’ve picked up Edwards wasn’t ignored by any means, but what we’ve heard suggests that he also maybe wasn’t mean to feel like a huge priority with so much focus on the game.
While Tennessee’s staff certainly didn’t ignore game prep for Arkansas last weekend they made sure to involve he and his family in the whole weekend, immersing them in the pregame and preparation experience as well as spending all day with them on Sunday before they left in the evening. Edwards made it clear to us in his exit interview after the visit that Tennessee ‘made me feel like a priority.’ We’re not proclaiming the Vols as the team to beat or anything here but they made a strong impression and it’s our opinion that they’re going to be a real factor for one of 2023’s top-10 prospects.

Elsewhere Tennessee continues to push hard for Lebanon’s Jared Hall and the Vols would love to lock that one up before the summer season rolled around. It’s unclear if he’s going to be interested in making a decision that early but Tennessee definitely has a little momentum after he made two unofficial visits within a couple of weeks of each other during January and February.
Another 2023 prospect who we mentioned as being expected to visit recently is Texas shooting guard Chris Johnson. Tennessee is still actively recruiting the top-50 prospect but now we expect an official visit to take place later in spring. If you’ll recall an earlier War Room note Johnson works out frequently with former Texas star T.J. Ford, someone who obviously has a close tie to Tennessee’s head coach.

I think I see where I misinterpreted, though it could have been stated more clearly by VQ.

I took that to be in reference to his Tennessee visit, which obviously contradicts the idea of us rolling out the red carpet. I see now, that it was likely referring to his UK visit back in November. My mistake.

Gotcha, yea that was referring the UK visit.

Recruiting is on the back burner for the next few weeks but the Vols continue to feel like they’re in very good position with five-star 2023 Justin Edwards out of Philadelphia. We’re not saying that Tennessee is the team to beat but the Vols are a real factor here and made a huge impression on the family during his official. Same can be said for Jared Hall out of Lebanon. Tennessee feels like they’re in a really good spot there. The Vols will try to lock that one down before summer season rolls around.

Barnes and two assistants made the trip to Philadelphia on Tuesday to visit with 2023 five-star prospect Justin Edwards. Edwards, if you’ll recall, made an official visit to Knoxville last month and Tennessee has continued to make a strong push for the No. 8 ranked prospect in the 2023 class. The fact that Barnes took time out of his week to visit a junior prospect is a strong sign of the kind of priority Edwards is for Tennessee.
