My biggest complaints with your potential lineup are that we would not be retaining Phillips and would have no PG in our lineup at all (I’m sure Dillone would be starting if ZZ wasn’t healthy in this scenario tho).
Having a PG that can attack the paint completely erases the problems you just referenced. Everyone points to this all the time, but all you have to do is look at how much better our offense hummed with KC at point at the end of the 22 season. It was the same cast of characters that we saw look terrible on offense for much of the season in 23, minus a PG that could attack and finish at the rim. You don’t need a SG and wing that can do that at all times when your PG can - your PG can open up the perimeter AND open up driving lanes for the other guards. Yes, it would be great to have all 3, but it’s a simple fact we won’t next season, barring a few young guys taking huge leaps forward. For this reason, signing a PG is tantamount to our success next season.Ive never thought the lack of PG was the problem at UT. I think the real problem is not having guards at the 1,2 and 3 on the floor at the same time that can handle pressure and create. You dont have to necessarily be a PG to do that. But you cant play at this level if your 1,2 and 3 play like they only played the 5 in high school. Yes a PG is the leader. But you saw what FAU did with multiple guards. We need multiple Combo guards.
Yes a good PG can solve some of these issues. But like i said having multiple guards on the court that can drive and handle the ball makes the whole issue not so important. You need more than one ball handler on the floor that can break you down.Having a PG that can attack the paint completely erases the problems you just referenced. If this is our squad (ZZ is healthy) and we land someone like Ledlum, we would stay in upper echelon in the SEC IMO and be a rock solid tournament team again. All the freshman have upside (it is a good class) and you would expect improvement from Phillips, Awaka, Aidoo, Mashack and possibly Edwards although not sure how many minutes he would get to prove it.Zeigler/Dilione
Santi/Gainey/Edwards
Mashack/Carr
Phillips/Jefferson/Phillips
Aidoo/Awaka/Estrella
And room for 1…
Yep. Really hope Dilione has grown his game when it comes to his ball handling and passing. He'd be a real change from ZZ where his size at the point would really create some problems for smaller guards. Just hope he's able to handle the quicker guards on defense and being a primary ball handler doesn't wear him down and affect his offense. Personally, I'd really prefer a proven PG to start and allow ZZ a gradual return where he'd come off the bench when he's fully recovered which, as he's stated, is his preference...coming off the bench vs starting. Surely Barnes won't let us go into another year without a second PG on the roster. Hope ZZ makes a full and ridiculously quick recovery, but sometimes things don't go as expected.Yes a good PG can solve some of these issues.
