2024 Presidential Race

The no tax on tips is a stupid policy and is a mindless election ploy by both sides. The government should not be in the business of subsidizing an entire industry, especially one already subsidized via FICA tip credits and minimum wage law differences....

The cashier at Target or the kid at the Chick Fil A drive thru line is providing a service to a customer just like a waitress. All should be subject to taxes for what they make in providing a service....

Actually no they shouldn’t. We need to abolish a lot more taxes as well or greatly reduce them. Taxes don’t mean anything when you can just print money.

And have you seen the reports that even though the official orders didn’t come out until July 2005, everyone knew through the grapevine that the orders were coming in November 2004. Walz knew what was coming and got out while he could.
And he even told his supervisors in February that he was staying in and would be deploying with them.
This kind of stuff might play okay in Little Canada (Minnesota) but it is going to go over like a lead ballon in the rest of flyover America.
That is unclear. See the comments from Major Kevin Olson of the Minnesota National Guard.

.... but even conceding all of that as accurate, it does not rise to the level of "desertion." That is a stretch to say the least.

I also think you are guilty of some wishful thinking here. George W. Bush failed to meet attendance requirements while in the Air National Guard. In 1972, Bush failed to meet the Air Force requirement for an annual physical examination and lost his authorization to be a pilot. How he was able to get into the Air National Guard is an even bigger question .... All of that came out in 2004, while John Kerry was being swift-boated. GWB still won re-election over the Medal of Honor recipient.

Finally ..... Trump took a medical deferment for bone spurs to avoid service in the Vietnam War ..... and you want me to believe that people are going to let this decide who they vote for? Wishful thinking at best.

Trump never claimed to have served. So yeah, he might have made a scummy move; but he didn’t lie about it.

And I myself have never used the term “desertion” in relation to Walz. He had every legal right to retire when he did. But morally speaking, it was a crappy move to pull on his unit as they had to bring in a new leader on short notice and get used to working together. Doubly crappy move after promising his command chain that he was staying on for the deployment everyone knew was coming.
But the biggest problem is the stolen valor. He has claimed in several recorded instances that he was “in war” or “In Afghanistan”. He has claimed to have PTSD from his service (in hyper dangerous Italy). He had a custom challenge coin produced that falsely gave his rank as Command Sergeant Major which is blatantly inaccurate. The big first step would be for Walz to have a Press Conference and at least admit to creating a false impression at several junctures in his political history. After that, maybe we can move forward. But ignoring the concerns is not going to get him anywhere

People don't make decisions on who to vote for over things like this. They just don't, and haven't in a long time ...

Look at the last 5 men to be elected President.

Bill Clinton : dodged the Vietnam War draft and lied about it. Defeated 2 men who were World War II vets (George Bush and Bob Dole).

George W. Bush : dodged service in Vietnam through somehow gaining admission to the Air National Guard. He didn't even fulfill his obligations to the Air National Guard. He still defeated John McCain in the 2000 Republican Primary and then defeated a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient, John Kerry, in the 2004 General Election.

Barack Obama : was too young to have served in Vietnam, but never served in the US Armed Forces in any capacity.

Donald Trump : received a total of 5 deferments including 1 for bone spurs.

Joe Biden : just like Trump, he had multiple student deferments and a medical one (asthma) which kept him out of Vietnam.

That Dan Quayle was accepted into the Indiana National Guard when there was a waiting list was made a big deal in 1988 when he was George Bush's VP candidate .... Bush/Quayle still won easily over Dukakis/Bentsen.

Basically .... nobody cares about this $hit anymore when they vote for President.

WTF are you talking about in the 2004 election?

Confusing Massachusetts Senator John Kerry's military record with that of former Democratic Party Senator Bob Kerrey from Nebraska .... which I think I've done before. Bob was the Navy SEAL who received the Medal of Honor. John received a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. I used to get them confused a lot, when they were in the Senate.

My wife, son, and I will all vote Trump here in NC as well as all those folks who voted Red in the landslide midterms and gave the Republicans a veto proof super majority in the state legislature. No way Harris wins NC overall, so we will be OK. She might win Mecklenburg County though...there's an incredible concentration of shtupid in Charlotte. Like most bigger cities, the poor and ignorant vote Dimwit endlessly despite things only getting worse and worse for them.

You seem so certain. Do tell.

And... just out of curiosity... was the 2020 election "stolen"?

Walz is way too far left for my liking; however, I dont think Walz's military stuff is a winner for a campaign with a guy that dodged the draft due to "bone spurs"....
Current president claimed “asthma” but had no problem being a football player and lifeguard . Bill and Obama opted out themselves. Bone spurs is a reach considering the last Dem to serve was Jimmy Carter.

Barack Obama didn't turn 18 years of age until August 4, 1979. What do you mean when you say he opted out?

whether they care about it enough to influence their vote or not isn’t the question. The question is “Is he guilty of stolen valor”? People can do whatever they wish with the answer; but the media owe us enough respect to be asking that question. Heaven knows they would be absolutely raking JD Vance over the coals of the same allegations were being made against him. All we ask is equal treatment instead of not even trying to hide whose side they are on any more.

Ole boy lied online and publicly for years. Allowed Minneapolis to burn with Floyd and made a hotline for his state to turn on their neighbor.

When your dad uses his extreme wealth and vast connections to get you out for "bone spurs", you lose the right to denigrate those who served...

This stupid sh-t is why Trump is taking a sure fire W and turning it into a tossup...

I would be interested in Don Shipley's opinion of whether or not anything Walz has said constitutes "stolen valor."

From what I've seen, I tend to think he would say no.

If you serve as POTUS, you can denigrate anyone who quits when called to action.

If he loses, this forum will go into full meltdown
I’m sorta like the DEMS. I will vote for Trump because Kamala goes against everything I believe in. But at the same time, none of these people are for us middle class folk. That’s the facts of the matter. I just can’t get behind some of the far left stuff they go for. Looking at the things Kamala did in California kill me. But I also know that she won’t run things at the POTUS. She will do what Obama tells her. But I agree with you, the country will be as divided as ever if he leaves

You act like there is some question about whether or not it constituted stolen valor. He is on a video recording claiming that he carried weapons in war. That is textbook stolen valor. So is handing out challenge coins with an exaggerated rank. These things are not in doubt. It’s like arguing that someone isn’t guilty of DUI when the blood alcohol level comes back over the limit.
