I think a lot of it comes down to messaging. worst day in US history? worse than 9/11? There was SSOOOO much hyperbole around it, that it makes it difficult to take the critiques as honest, or worth much consideration. I remember legit thinking I was going to see pitchforks and torches, huge flames coming from the Capitol, and members of Congress & staff swinging on ropes, when I first read about it on CNN.Nobody has an answer for this.* They just insist that it’s not what it clearly was and laugh at people pointing out what it was.
But then they get offended when you point out that they are gullible or believe what they want to be true.
*- hat tip to @volfanhill for blaming the lawyers. The only substantive answer I’ve gotten, and from a guy who doesn’t even defend Trump.
especially when you compare that language with another borderline civil war starter, in
and its been chicken little with Trump from day 1. I remember the Rs losing their minds with Obama, but what happened with Trump was something else. Trump getting two scoops of ice cream was ruining our foreign policy and going to start WW3. His tie was too long, and that meant no one was going to respect him on the world stage. Every single piece of rhetoric on Trump was ratcheted up to 11 from day one. so when, after 4 years of that, we get a big enough event to go to 11, it was back ground noise. boy who cried wolf. I keep waiting for their to be an improvement in one sides reaction to the other, but it doesn't look like its happening in my life.
also most of right leaning, not even sayings Rs or MAGAs, don't put as much emphasis on the physical government as more left leaning people do. like if Washington just magically disappeared tomorrow, most right leaning people are going to react a lot less dramatically than the left leaning would. so even the Capitol had been burnt down most on the right weren't going to assume it was the end of the US or our way of government.
100% the reaction from the right would have been worse if it was Dems storming the capitol instead of MAGA, but it wouldn't have been 1/6 reaction bad. just different priorities, messaging, and perceived threat levels.
