2024 Recruiting Thread

I don't think a WNBA team in Nashville would be the slightest competition for the LVs. First of all, sadly, not that many people care about the W at all. Sorry, just saying. Also, very few routinely come fm Nashville for LV games and if they do, having a W team won't stop them.

Also, as far as the TItans hurting the Vol's support, are you kidding? People are lining up for those incredibly expensive Vol football tickets and will do so even more now that they're good again.

LV fans seemed to turn out vs Vandy this weekend. Four-hour drives suck and TVs are nice... so I don't really blame them.

Woo!

Pro teams (even one in Nashville) don't care about giving TN girls a chance. You can already see that LVs fans are typically an older crowd. Adding a distraction in TN's premier city will detract from the LVs, not support it.

Same as the Titans. Tennessee used to be a one-sport state: Volunteer football. Yes, there was a pocket of Memphis 8 hours west of Knoxville, but otherwise, UT football ruled the roost. That support has been eaten into by the Titans over the years - well, that and a historic run of failure on the field for Tennessee.

Majority of the girls (basketball and softball) view Tennessee as their team growing up, rosters on both say it does not matter.
I think a lot of posters are still stuck in the glory days. Saying Tennessee does not need a pro team because the focus needs to be on the LV's is absurd lol not you personally just the consensus on the board. It's been a long time since the LV's were in prominence and a hot ticket to get lets be realistic. A Wnba team would only help the support of the LV's , how they could hurt seems farfeteched and selfish on a personal level.

It's a wish list, not a prediction list, my gloomy friend.
That said, our NIL machine needs to be humming this cycle. We can't get outbid like last year.
Maybe with a pro team investors take WBB more serious and actually give more for the boosters on the college platform .

I think those of are the days past . The WNBA will be spotlighted this season with Griners return . You can make an argument that not many people care about the LV's in the same breath as of late lol . I care , clearly we all do on this board but i dont support individuals who dont support the game as a whole .

But you can't spend the same dollar twice.
Why does it have to be the same dollar ? Money is infinite and the same boosters who care so much about our LV's will either choose to support a pro team or new boosters will emerge to support them .It's not a matter of competition but of growth an opportunity on home soil for the young girls .

Money is absolutely finite, not infinite, we all can't be Congress.

Also, a hypothetical WNBA team being located in Nashville is clearly to honor the women's basketball legacy of Pat and UT, not to diminish it. Same with the Connecticut Sun re: UConn.

Realistically though, a WNBA expansion would first go to areas like Toronto and Oakland.

And a pro team isn't going to draft girls from Tennessee for any reason other than winning. Pro teams are only about pro teams. They are never going to care about anything else.
There's been a precedence in the WNBA of teams going after local players. Lindsay Whalen/Janel McCarville for the Minnesota Lynx and the plethora of UConn also-rans that made their way onto the Connecticut Suns roster over the years comes to mind. I'm sure that the Lynx will do everything in their power to get Bueckers, and not just because she's a great player. If there's an opportunity to build up hype, I'm sure teams wouldn't mind tossing out a roster spot even if it isn't directly related to winning.

Oakland, I can see. But why do you think Toronto?

People say they support the WNBA on Twitter, but they don't really support the WNBA. It's not like they go to the games or anything. They just want the social media likes.

The media cared about the whole Griner saga way more than the public did. I don't think her return to the league will bring in any new fans. Truth be told, her arrest was probably the most publicity that the league has ever gotten and it still won't be something they will be able to monetize.

Agreed i think Toronto and Oakland will win the 2 bids but who's to say 2 years afterwards they dont expand even more. The game is growing in all fashions professionally from $$ , to viewership , to teams . Nashville will have a team soon if they dont take over the atlanta dream or indiana fever first.

Toronto spearheaded the WNBA expansion talk a few years back when the league held a meeting with the Toronto Raptors , now the W is sampling a preseason game in Canada this year to gauge interest . Toronto and Oakland have always been serious players . The rumors of Philly and Milwaukee along with nashville have gained traction but not as serious with investors as those first two .

I actually go to WNBA games as a season ticket holder and i see at least 6000 folks per night for my team . Overall that's not even the most determining factor. Realizing all those WNBA basher men or women are now older and have little girls who are realizing they can make a professional career as a basketball player changing those basher men/women's mindset about the game. The WNBA has been around almost 30 years in 60 and in 90 this won't even be a topic.

I don't think everyone who doesn't enjoy WNBA games is a basher. In fact I know it, bc I'm one of them. Obviously I love the LVs and love college basketball, always have. But for reasons I don't understand myself, I can't sit thru a WNBA game on TV. If former LVs are involved I'll give it a try, but am usually channel surfing after a few minutes. I feel exactly the same about NBA games. Don't know why.

It's becoming a basketball town, and with the number of Canadian players in the league increasing, it's the most likely choice for an Eastern Conference expansion city and the one most often named as a potential location. Philadelphia and Nashville are the other commonly named Eastern Conf cities, or bringing a team back to Charlotte.

The thing with the W is the popularity of a team seems related more to its star players than the actual location. Seattle's been super popular for a couple of decades but with Sue Bird gone and possibly losing Stewie and Loyd, what will happen to that rabid crowd? When Taurasi retires, what will happen to Phoenix?

I have heard Cambridge will be announcing her top 5 soon !!!!!

Doubt we are in it. Would be surprised anyway, she’s never posted anything from her visits here. So unless she wants to totally shock everyone I doubt she’s coming here.

She’s made posts from her visits to Baylor, Ohio State, North Carolina, LSU, Louisville and Florida.

Guessing the first 5 are her top 5 eliminating UF.

Maybe things have changed with this staff, the coaches do follow her and so does Puckett. But just don’t think we should get too excited.
